Part 1

1.) She is looking for employees for her company.

a) What do you think should be the personality characteristics of the candidates which would suit
such a venture?

As per the definition, personality is the collection of behaviors with which an individual reacts and
interacts with others.

One’s personality can be measured by Big Five personality traits & MBTI model.

Since the job involves making creative things and children the candidate should express the following
traits, as per the Big Five personality trait Model.

He/ She should be Curious, intellectual, creative, cultured, artistically sensitive, flexible, imaginative,
organized, self-disciplined, sociable, cooperative, warm, caring, good-natured calm and happy.

And, according to The Myers–Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI)

The person should exhibit the ESFP characteristic.

He/ She should be

Extraversion - they should get their energy from outer world.

Sensing – They should pay attention to details, concrete and specific.

Feeling - They should evaluate and make decisions following their heart, circumstance and mercy.

Perceiving – They should be Flexible, Open ended, exploring and spontaneous.

b) What are the ways in which she could motivate her employees to give their 100% to the job?

Employees can be motived by three types, either by incentivizing them, make them fear about the
punishments or by nurturing them.

In this fear and incentives are temporary it acts as a motivation only for short time and sometimes it
may backfire. But the nurturing is constant, Arpita has to make a circumstance which can help
employees to get motivated themselves.

Aprita can adapt nurturing as the motivator factor.

2.) Additionally, what influenced her decision to open such an organization and was it a

programmed or a non-programmed decision?

Arpita was a socially confident person and a marketer, who also loved making creative gifts for
loved ones.

She was influenced by two things:

1. Her love for making creative gifts

2. Other people who would also want to make creative gifts.

It was a non-programmed decision as there aren’t any defined steps or a process to achieve the

Objective of making creative gifts. It totally depends on the individual’s level of creativity which

has no boundaries.

Part 2

1. What kind of power does Manit’s Boss have?

Manit's boss is exhibiting positional power more precisely legitimate power.

From this case study we can clearly understand the same as Manit's boss is not helping him and guiding
him, he only wants to find mistakes in Manit's work and scold him.

2. Is there any evidence of Office politics? How ?

As we know that politics is nothing but power in action. In Manit’s case in his organization there is

some evidence of politics happening. Manit was disappointed that he was getting only second-hand

information which affects his work. Here we can see that the personal power that is the

informational power which his boss has comes to action. So Manit could not get to sit in meetings

and he gets only second-hand information on the decisions taken. Also he confirms that his boss

does not give him relevant information till the last minute and will complaint on his performance.

With this we can see the informational power is put into action thus proving the evidence of politics.

Also Manit says that his boss makes him to do his weekly pending work so he could not spend his

weekends. Here we can see his boss uses his power to complete his pending job which is an

advantage to the boss and disadvantage to Manit. With this evidences we can clearly prove politics
here. Politics may not be happening in a high range, but is taking place.

3. What kind of conflict do you think is happening between Manit and his boss and why?

From the case study, we can say that there is interpersonal conflict happening between Manit and his
Boss.

Interpersonal conflict occurs when two or more people perceive goals, attitudes, values, and behavior
differently. For e.g we may have experienced interpersonal conflict at school/college when our teacher
felt that you were not working as hard as you felt you were working; the two of you had conflicting
perceptions concerning your behavior. Interpersonal conflicts are especially common in the workplace,
since we are often forced to work with people whose ideas and values differ from our own. In the same
way many organizational conflicts stems from the fact that employees and managers have different
perceptions of situations. For example, a manager may feel that an employee is underperforming,
whereas the employee may feel that the best job possible is being done.

Why the conflict?

It is because of following reasons conflict occurred between Manit and his Boss

First impression Error: When Manit joined initially, boss himself did one report which was assigned to
Manit as he did not understand urgency of report.

Taking help from colleague is taken negatively by manager

Puts his work on Manit and as a result Manit ends up working during weekends

Boss tells him to stop complaining and concentrate on work as you paid for that.

Boss behaves in two faced and changes according to his situation for e.g if anything Manit does on own,
Boss says you are not experienced to do things on own and same way if Manit goes for some advice he
also says there is no initiative from his side do to things and how will you learn.

Looked as minion in team and doing tasks for other managers.

Kept distant from discussions

Digs some urgent work when on leave.

Due to above few reasons, conflict arised between Manit and his Boss and as a result Manit is very
uncomfortable working under him and he is not happy at all. He does not value Manit’s concerns and it
is always one way communication from boss side. Even HR is not ready to listen and was supporting
Manit’s boss. Due to all these reasons, he was ready to resign also without having any offer in his hand.
4. Do you think Manit is a team player? Why or why not?

There are a few incidents that show Manit is a team player.

Why –

He is ready for doing his manager’s pending work occasionally.

He wants to be a part of his team. But he was being alienated by his colleagues for some reasons.

But his thought was to be a part of the team. We can say his initiative was less for being in the team only
because of his issue with boss.
