Terephthaloyl dichloride and p-phenylenediamine were polymerized to form a copolymer

called Kevlar with Mn of 250,000 g/mol. Calculate:
A) the extent of reaction, P
B) the average degree of polymerization, DP.
C) Mw of the polymer
D) polydispersity index

QUESTION 4

The step-growth polymerization reaction between hexamethylene diamine and sebacoyl

chloride forms a type of fiber known as nylon 6,10 and the polymerization occurs between
the surface of the reactants.

A) Write the polymerization reaction of these reactants. Draw the structure of polymer
and by-product.
[4 marks]

B) Calculate the number average degree of polymerization, DP, for the above reaction
mixture if the reaction has proceeded for 96%. Determine the number average
molecular weight, Mn and weight average molecular weight, Mw. Assume that the
amount of functional groups are equal at the start of the reaction.
