FREE MORPHEME

 Type of morpheme
 A simple word consist of a single morpheme, which is free morpheme.
 Free morpheme is a base morpheme.
 Because it can make sense on its own.
 It can stand alone with meaning as word.
 It can work in isolation.
 It is independent.
 When we seperat it from other morpheme then it doesn’t loss its meaning.

e.g

Covered, cover = free, ed = bound

cover doesn’t loss meaning book, the, an, Ali

TYPE OF FREE MORPHEME


Functional morpheme Lexical morpheme
Have abstract meaning Have contant meaning
Close class morpheme Open class
Can’t make new words Can make new word easily
E.g. preposition, articles pronounce and e.g. verb adjectives and noun
conjunction

An additional type of morpheme is also present which compound morpheme is

Compound Morpheme:

When two free morphemes have separately meaning combine to make a new meaningful word is called
compound morpheme.

e.g.

Tea time,

Both have meaning and when we separate them with each other they can’t lose their meaning.
