VitalSource is excited to launch new enhancements to the Bookshelf


Reader experience, in response to learner feedback. These will be live in
summer 2021.

What to Expect for Bookshelf
in Summer 2021

Bookshelf will have a streamlined, modern design and new study features to
improve the learner reading experience.

What’s Changing in Bookshelf
in Summer 2021?

VitalSource is redesigning the Bookshelf reader experience with a


clean, distraction-less design. We’re excited to release the following
new study features:

1. Integrated search 3. New dedicated workbook


2. Improved table of contents 4. Margin note-taking
navigation

Why These Changes?

VitalSource conducted extensive user testing of the Bookshelf Reader in


Spring 2020. All new changes are inspired by learner feedback. We applied
this research to prototypes and shared them with users who offered Insights
and confirmed the direction and scope.

How Will VitalSource Roll Out This Update?

Bookshelf will roll out this update systematically across apps and online.
Publishers and institutions with branded sites will be updated to the new
design between July-August 2021. Your customer success manager will be
in touch regarding the timing.

Note: Deep links and other integrations will not be affected by this change. The library experience will look and stay the same.

Bookshelf Reader Refresh Transition Guide: Online

This guide will describe the updated interface for the Bookshelf Reader
refresh. It will show images of the new reader, as well as details on how the
new interface will function. The goal of this guide is to provide institutions,
publishers, corporations, and professional partners adequate information
about the depth and scope of this redesign and aid in updating any user-
facing documentation for a successful launch.

New Features

Edit and view Notes and Highlights in-


line with our new margin notes feature.
For new notes and highlights:

Select text, pick a highlight colour, and


click Add Note.

Create and edit note in the margin.

For existing note review:

Click caret on top right to expand or collapse


the margin.

Click on a note to edit.

Table of Contents

Interface Updates Upon Reader Launch, the Table of Contents (TOC) will
open automatically.

Select any entry in the TOC to navigate to the location


in the book.

Clicking the caret will expand the TOC node.

Use the Expand or Collapse buttons to expand or collapse


all TOC nodes.

Note: Users will see the TOC automatically close when they activate
right hand panel options unless they have a mega monitor. TOC search
is now present in the search panel and no longer available in this panel.
Table of Contents

Opening the … menu in the TOC will present the following options:

Citation, moved from the bottom right of the scrubber

Download Offline, moved from the settings menu

Copy Page, moved from the bottom right of the scrubber

Note: Citation, Download Offline, and Copy Page functionality will not change.

Integrated Search

Search now integrates results from


Content, Figures, and Workbook.
Click on the search icon in the top right to activate Bookshelf Search.

Entering a search term yields matches from the Content, Figures, and
Workbook.

Clicking carets expand and collapse search results grouped by


chapter.
Expand or Collapse buttons will expand or collapse all chapter nodes.

Clicking a search term will navigate to the term within the book.

Note: The Figures panel is being replaced with this integrated search experience.

type-ahead with suggestions from the

Contains Annotations (previously


called Notebook), Bookmarks, and
Flashcards.
Annotations are grouped by chapter.

Clicking Export allows a user to print their notes and highlights or


export them to OneNote.

Selecting a highlighter colour dot will filter annotations by highlighter.

The + opens the Reader Preferences modal allowing users to add or


edit highlighters.

Expand or Collapse buttons will expand or collapse all chapter nodes.

Clicking a highlight will navigate a user to the highlight within the book.
