THEMES
Before reading further, contemplate what these themes might mean
1. Science vs Religion and the Supernatural
2. The Individual vs Society
3. Addiction and Desperation
4. Duality and Repression
3 What is your belief system? Where did you learn it? Was it easy for you to learn about other religions, and
what impact did this have in your life?
Answer: Christianity is my belief system. I was born a Christian, so I definitely side with religion since I
follow and believe in one. Yeah, it was not that hard to learn about other religions too, it had more of an
acknowledging impact in my life. Knowing and enlightening myself about other religions broadened my
mind of knowledge based on beliefs, morals, and principles.
4 If you had children, would you raise them to have the same beliefs as you? Why or why not?
Answer: Of course, I will. Not because everyone does it that way in my family but because I have felt the
essence of my religion and seen what it is capable of and a lot of other things which are yet to be uncovered. I
would want them to follow such morals and commandments which will eventually benefit their worldly life
and their spiritual life.
THEME 2
Individuals vs Society EXPLANATION OF THEME
Individuals (separate persons) live in a society together. If each person obeys the social rules and laws of the
country, then we can live together peacefully. But individuals are all different and all want different things.
Often we want to enjoy ourselves instead of taking on boring, difficult, stressful duties (responsibilities).
Society (groups of people close together) needs everyone to take responsibility and obey the rules for living
together. Corruption, violence, and suffering in society causes anxiety within social groups. Society is
important, but some societies have made harmful decisions, too. Individuals are responsible for changing
society. Not everything is right in society, just because there is consensus. Ideas can change over time. For
example, in 1886, sexism was entrenched in the law. Women couldn’t vote in England at this time. Another
example of this is Apartheid. Apartheid oppressed and brutalized people of color. Consensus (agreement) about
what is ‘good’ and ‘evil’ in a society changes. It is up to individuals to make sure society is fair and equitable.
We must always question our society to make sure that it is fair for everyone.
Answer the following questions in BLUE
1 Do you think that people should live together in societies, or alone? Why?
Answer: I think that a human being cannot live alone in isolation even inside a society or if not. Because at
some point in our lives, we are dependent and that is extremely natural. And it is pleasant to interact with one
another, to know about one’s life and story, you can understand and clarify yourself by engaging in
conversations with people.
3 What do you think happens when you try to repress (hide or restrain) some part of yourself? Why?
Answer: Speaking from experience, it triggers a lot of distress and physical stress in the mind and the body. It
also tends to affect one’s self-esteem. It is pretending to live a normal life when there is whole ton of thoughts
annoying you and traumatizing you. And it must be very, very difficult to keep it all in for one.
4 What happens when individuals choose to disobey the social rules and the law?
Answer: They face fines, violations, prison and several other horrible punishments.
5 Should these individuals be punished? Why or why not? And if so, how should they be punished? Explain.
Answer: Yes, one should be punished when he/she violates the law because it is order and law. They are
made to lead to a better life yet restricted. Crimes that are not that serious can be rewarded a second chance
but grotesque crimes such as homicide and rape and many more, people who commit those crimes merit more
than just prison such as tortures of any merciless kind.
THEME 3
Addiction and Desperation EXPLANATION OF THEME
Addiction is when we become dependent on something. When we become dependent on something, we need
that thing in order to survive or to be happy. We all eat food. However, someone who is addicted to food will
want food to make them feel happy. They will eat continuously because it makes them feel happy – not because
they feel hungry. If you are an addict, you cannot control the urge you have for that thing. You can be addicted
to many different things: drugs, alcohol, the Internet, food etc. Some addictions are more socially acceptable:
many people think drinking too much alcohol is fine. Tik or nyaope are less acceptable. Addiction often
escalates (gets worse), even when it seems as if it’s under control. Our brains crave the reward chemicals
(dopamine and serotonin) that make us feel happy. When we are addicted, we may want to stop our addiction
because it is damaging our relationships with friends and family, but we can’t. We always need more and more
of the thing or activity we are addicted to – and we might do stupid or illegal things to get it. Addictions have to
power to ruin people’s lives. Frequently addicts need some kind of professional help (like rehab) in order to
recover from their addiction.
Answer the following questions in BLUE
1 What forms of addiction are prevalent (you see a lot of) in your community?
Answer: I would say smoking and vaping to start with, in which both include nicotine as their primary agents.
In home, I would say alcohol addiction or even heroin addiction.
2 Should people with addictions be punished or helped? Why?
Answer: They should be helped and not punished because it is palpably their mental distress that is causing
them to commit to such addiction. By helping them in rehab, we can help them by decreasing their addiction
which may eventually help reduce mental problems and promote achievements and enhancements in life
gradually, but it is, indeed, a very rigid and a mighty path to partake on.
2 What behaviors do you think is evil or immoral? Give two examples and motivate your answers.
Answers: Backbiting is a disgusting thing to do. So is murder because how can you so easily remove one’s
life from this world by your will, one’s mother knows that pain. Think about that, it’s not easy for any mother
to carry her daughter/son for nine months in her womb. Also, not to mention the fact she had to protect
him/her all their lives and influence them of decent ways just all to be killed one day. It is a type of pain to be
never recovered from and is the type of pain that will scar a mother or a father for life. As for backbiting, it is
talking maliciously about someone who is not current. It is by far one of the worst sins to commit because it
will not end pleasant for one when the day comes.
3 What behavior do you think is good or moral? Give two examples and motivate your answers.
Answer: Loyalty and diligence. Being loyal is also the quality of trustworthiness and reliability since it is the
obligation to act all times in the top interests of their ones. Diligence is obedience and to act accordingly to
higher powers for a fair cause.
4 Do you think that we should always repress our destructive impulses (urges)? Why or why not?
Answer: In public or in the front of the one you love must be repression or must be released if one cannot
keep all of it in. It is therefore very effective to vent. So, one should not repress their impulses if it does not
cause any damage to others, which by chance, is very slim.
