1. PTWC must be obtained in addition to Gas Free Certificate before entering

confined space or working on or near gas lines.
2. No one should enter confined space or work on or near hazardous gas lines
without carrying out gas test

ATMOSPHERIC GAS TESTING GUIDELINES

Authorized Gas Tester shall:

1. Carry out gas tests in his facility / department as instructed by Authorized Permit Issuer (API),
i. In all confined spaces prior to issue of Permit to Work Certificate (PTWC)
ii. Prior to allowing any hot work on or near explosive or flammable gas systems or other works at / near
places with suspected atmospheric hazards of flammable or toxic gases, and
iii. Frequently or continuously during the work period, as specified by Authorized Permit Controller (APC) in
Permit to Work Certificate (PTWC).

2. Before carrying out gas test:

i. Ensure gas detector is approved by MaSa QHSE Safety Section, calibrated and compatible to use in air,
flammable atmosphere or inert atmosphere as required
ii. Make general surveillance of the surroundings for any circumstances which might give rise to contamina-
tion of the atmosphere including:
a) Changes in wind strength and direction.
b) Failure of ventilation arrangement.
c) Drainage system abnormalities.
d) Vents, leaks or spills in the vicinity.
e) Operational activities in the vicinity or in the area
f) Effect of the non operational work that will be conducted in the area.

3. For gas testing

i. Stop ventilation
ii. Check concentration of flammable gas / vapours, hazardous toxic gases and oxygen using gas detector
and record in PTWC.
iii) Interpret the results obtained and sign PTWC with comments whether safe to enter “yes or no” and
handover PTWC to API.

4. In case of frequent gas testing:

i. Conduct gas test every day or at specified time intervals as specified by APC in section 4 of PTWC and
record in gas free certificate prior to allowing people to enter inside confined space and commence work.
ii. Test the gas detector to verify proper functioning of alarm in case of continuous gas monitoring and
iii. Place it at the breathing zone of people at all times when people are working inside confined spaces.
iv. Instruct people to evacuate the area if alarm sounds,
v. Inform APC / API of the if any new hazard occurs
vi. Retest the atmosphere on rectification of hazards occurred, prior to recommencement of the job,
vii. Interpret the results and comment in gas free certificate accordingly.
