This course is designed to provide student an understanding of contemporary HRM and the various
functions of human resource management, including compensation and benefits, staffing, recruitment and
selection, research, labour relations, training and development, health and safety, planning, mediation and
arbitration, the influence of government legislation on industry, and human rights legislation and
employment equity.

Synopsis:
This course will cover the main topics of human resource management (HRM). The topics includes
strategic role of HRM, assessing the environment, plan and setting objectives, external staffing, employee
development, compensation and labour relations.

Content

The Strategic Role of Human Resource Management

 Explain what HRM is and how it relates to the management process;


 Give at least examples of how managers can use HR concepts and techniques; and
illustrate the HR management responsibilities of line and staff (HR) managers;
 Provide a good example that illustrates HR’s role in formulating and executing company
strategy

 Explain what a strategy-oriented HR system is and why it is important
