The Risks of Smoking

Aaron V. Austria
(From The Spectrum, the official student publication of Biñan Secondary School of Applied
Academics)

President Duterte signed the Executive Order No. 26 prohibiting smokers to smoke in public
places nationwide. After the nationwide rule has taken effect it is very timely to discuss the harms of
smoking.
Smoking harms almost every organ of the body and causes ill health. In fact, the data in 2019
from the Department of Health (DOH) reveals an estimated 713, 000 deaths attributed to diseases
caused by smoking. These staggering number continues to increase despite different measures
implemented by government and other non-government agencies.
As part of the measure, agencies continue to educate the public on the different risks of
smoking. These pieces of information are read and heard everywhere to remind smokers the harms
of smoking that they sounded cliché in the ears of the smokers but these are factual and should be
taken seriously.
Smoking is a major factor for coronary heart disease, a condition in which plaque builds up
inside the coronary arteries that supply your heart muscle with oxygen-rich blood, the condition is
called atherosclerosis. This condition increases your risk of having and dying from heart disease, heart
failure, or a heart attack. Smoking is also the cause of Peripheral Artery Disease or shortly known as
P.A.D., is a disease in which plaque builds up in the arteries that carry blood to your head, organs,
and limbs. P.A.D. usually affects the arteries that carry blood to your legs that can cause cramping,
pain, weakness, and numbness in your hips, thighs, and calf muscles.
Smoking damages airways and small air sacs in the smoker’s lungs. It may take years for the
problem to be noticeable or diagnosed. If severe, it may worsen pneumonia and asthma and the
worst it can cause lung cancer. Smoke touches all living cells and no organ is spared when you smoke
so it is likely that smoking can cause cancer. Unfortunately, not only smokers are affected by these
diseases even non-smokers who happen to inhale smoke from a day to day encounter to smokers
can imbibe illnesses. Secondhand smoke can damage the heart and blood vessels of people who
don’t smoke in the same way that active smoking harms people who do smoke.
These are the most common diseases attributed to smoking that increase the mortality rate in
the Philippines. Despite government warnings, the department is still alarmed with the increase of
smokers in the country.
However, the government continues to make efforts to urge the public to work with the
government to decrease smoking rates and spread information about the risks of smoking to prevent
further diseases and deaths.
