6. SEQUENCE OF WORKS

6.1 General

Soil nailing and shotcrete will be applied as remedial measures to areas where the stability of the
sides of excavation is questionable. These areas are to be determined by HDEC Geotechnical
Engineer. As such, the design of the soil nails, i.e. the length, number, and placement (spacing)
of the soil nails will be decided by him. Furthermore, the size of the area where shotcrete will be
applied will also vary depending on his design.
P003 – Lusail Expressway

METHOD STATEMENT FOR SOIL NAILING AND
Rev. 1 Page 8 of 47
SHOTCRETE WORKS

Unstable sides of excavation will be identified for nailing and shotcreting through regular
inspection by HDEC Geotechnical Engineer as excavation is ongoing. Excavation on succeeding
layers will proceed only after the required nailing and shotcreting on the current excavation layer
is completed.

However, on areas where the overlying ground has already been cut, the application of shotcrete
and nailing as remedial support will be done after backfilling of soil platform to around 1.00m
below the proposed 1st layer of soil nail is completed.

6.2 Excavation

Excavation will be carried out in layers to provide an adequate working platform for nailing and
shotcreting works to proceed. Ramps will also be provided for access of all plant and equipment
needed for the operation. The idea is to excavate a platform level around 1.00m below the nail
layer for easy drilling and installation of the soil nails. Moreover, the platform needs to have
around 10m width (perpendicular distance from the wall side) to give enough room for the drilling
machine to maneuver. After an excavation layer is completed, an excavator will be used to trim
the surface of the nail wall to the desired tolerances.

1.1 Soil Nailing

Figure 1. Typical arrangement of soil nails.

The location of the nail holes and weep holes shall be marked on the surface of excavated soil by

the surveyor prior to the start of drilling operations. From Figure 4, vertical spacing will be with
respect to the vertical axis. The 1st nail layer is installed in the specified elevation. The 2 nd, 3rd,
and 4th nail layers’ elevation will be 1.5m, 3.0m, and 4.5m below the 1 st nail layer elevation
respectively. Horizontal spacing on the other hand will be along the excavated face. Then, a
rotary drilling rig machine equipped with DTH (Down the Hole) hammer of appropriate bit size
diameter shall be used to drill the holes according to the design length, direction and angle of
inclination as per project drawing. The hammer shall be operated using an air compressor and
the cuttings shall be flushed out using compressed air.

The grout shall consist of a cement-water slurry mixed in a colloidal mixer at site and pumped
using a grout pump. Grout strength will be 30 MPa and Cebex-100 (or equivalent) admixture will
be added to non-shrink the grout mix. Water in the required quantity will be added to the colloidal
mixer before cement while admixture will be added during the latter half of the mixing time.
Mixing will not be less than 2 minutes. Grout shall be continuously agitated before it is pumped.

Grout will be pumped through the grout pipe attached in the nail assembly for this purpose. A
gate valve will be fitted to the grout pipe to control the flow of the grout. Grouting shall continue
until the grout comes out of the tip of the borehole. Crumpled used-cement bags will then be
used to plug the hole around the steel bar and the grout pipe until the grout will only be coming
out from a small spot at the top of the hole. As the initial grout hardens, the grout pipe will be
slowly pulled-out, while still grouting, until only a small section of the pipe is left in the hole. The
gate valve is then closed to conclude the grouting process. The protruding grout pipe is later cut
after the grout has hardened.

SHOTCRETE WORKS

Figure 4. Typical details of slope nail with shotcrete.

1.2 Shotcrete Works

6.2.1 Preparation prior to shotcrete

Prior to the application of shotcrete, the wall surface shall be cleaned by pumping air, if
necessary. A good surface preparation is essential to sprayed concrete works. Before
shotcreting is started on the wall, a guide for shotcrete thickness will be installed at the
surface using steel rods placed to the required surface line of shotcrete. An electric hand
drill will be used to drill small holes on the wall surface to the same diameter as the rod
which will then be hammered or cut to the correct surface line to ensure no protrusion.

6.2.2 Shotcreting

The working platform used for nailing activities shall also be used to carry out shotcreting
works. Depending on design height of nail layers, for example 1.2 meter layer difference,
then it is possible to perform one (1) shotcrete layer over two (2) layers of soil nails since
wire mesh width is 2.4 meters.

First, wire mesh shall be installed using 10mm diameter reinforcing steel bar as dowels
inserted into the wall surface. The purpose of wire mesh is to provide light reinforcement
to the shotcrete surface. Regarding irregular shapes of area to be shotcreted or wherein
soil cavity is present, the wire mesh will follow the contour or profile of the soil to address
the required concrete cover. After the wire mesh, the nail head plates, nuts and washers
will be installed. Shotcrete thickness is 50mm and design strength at 28 days is 25 MPa.

Dry mix shall be batched using one (1) bagger mixer at the site. Volumetric 300mm x
300mm x 300mm boxes shall be used for control of proportions of sand and aggregates.
Proper QA/QC records for batches mixed shall be maintained and random inspections
carried out to review adherence to mix design requirements.
P003 – Lusail Expressway

Doc. No.: ACC-EW-LEW-QCD-MST-007

METHOD STATEMENT FOR SOIL NAILING AND
Rev. 1 Page 12 of 47
SHOTCRETE WORKS

Dry mix shall be sprayed on site using ALIVA 246.5 & 257 machines. It is first fed into the
hopper of the ALIVA machine and then an air compressor is used to convey the mix
through the nozzle. As it discharges from the nozzle, water is introduced to it, from
another hose in such a quantity that it produces a shotcrete of the desired consistency in
a steady flow.

The operation of the spraying machine is based on the rotor principle. The concrete dry
mix materials are fed into a hopper with an agitator which leads by an inlet opening into
the rotor chamber. By turning the rotor the concrete materials fall through the air chamber
and with the additional help of the lower air through the conveying hose. The concrete
materials float in the air stream to the spraying nozzle.

While spraying, the nozzle shall be kept at least 1m from the wall surface and in such a
way that it is perpendicular to it. The shotcrete shall be applied in small circular motion
and the passes shall extend from bottom to top or vice versa so as to build up the required
thickness that covers the steel reinforcement mesh. A second layer of shotcrete shall then
be applied for rough finishing.

On specific areas where water is leaking from the soil surface, it is possible that shotcrete
materials will not stick to the soil surface. To prevent this from occurring, 50mm diameter
x 200mm long PVC pipes will be inserted to divert the water leakage before shotcreting on
that area is performed. These pipes will later be removed and plugged by appropriate
methods after shotcrete has hardened. All loose and rebound materials shall be removed
from finished the surface.

6.2.3 Weep holes

These holes are required in order to release the water pressure contained in the soil
surface. There will be one (1) weep hole for every 5 meters. The weep holes will be
installed prior to shotcrete works or vice versa using 50mm diameter PVC pipes plugged
with used cement bags and removed after completion of shotcreting works.

6.2.4 Curing

Cure Y 40, a concrete curing compound, will be sprayed one time on the surface of
finished shotcrete after a couple of hours.

6.2.5 Testing on Site

Pull-out and site suitability tests shall be performed on nails. Pull-out test will be
performed on trial nails and site suitability test on 0.5 percent of the working nails. Third
party will be involved for executing those tests and report will be issued accordingly.
Specific procedure (based on BS 5080 Part-01:1993 and ASTM C900-01) and approval
of third party will be submitted for approval to the Engineer’s representative.

A schematic drawing shows the principle of pull-out test.

7. NIGHT WORKS

During night, all major activities will be continued. Adequate spot lighting shall be provided in the
work area by using tower lights. Lighting arrangement will be further adapted during progress of
works as and when required.

8. STORAGE AND PROTECTION OF MATERIALS

Deformed reinforcing steel bars will be stored horizontally so that there will be no bends along its
length. Moreover, it shall be stored with wood planks underneath and covered with polyethylene
sheets to prevent damages on its components. Cement bags must be placed in a wood palette
so that there is no contact with soil and also covered by polyethylene sheet when not in use. A
mixing pad shall be provided when storing manual dry concrete mix during continuous operation.

9. COORDINATION WITH OTHER SUBCONTRACTORS

Nailing and Shotcrete works shall be separated from other activities with proper safety measures
to avoid any conflict. Any interference with other subcontractors shall be managed by HDEC
through weekly coordination meetings and daily briefings and instruction on site.

Following interfaces are expected with ongoing excavation works:
