Safety – Hyperactive, Psychomotor Agitation of a client in the manic phase of Bipolar
Learning Objectives:
1. Be able to use therapeutic communication with a client experiencing a manic
episode of bipolar disorder
2. Be able to use appropriate nursing interventions to de-escalate a client
3. Use therapeutic communication to perform assessments on a client with Bipolar
Disorder to determine risk and safety measures to perform as nursing
interventions.
4. Recognize drug allergies
Due date for this assignment: Assignment must be submitted 24 hours before
the student scheduled simulation experience.
Assignments to be completed:
Please read Chapter 17 – Bipolar and Related Disorders – 420-449. Be prepared to perform
an assessment on a client who is experiencing a manic episode of Bipolar Disorder. Know what
actions/interventions that a nurse would take to provide safety.
The Information below is to be turned submitted 24 hours before the student’s simulation
experience under the “completed Assignment tab”:
Medications to be reviewed:
Seroquel (Quetiapine)
Eskalith (Lithium Carbonate)
Geodon (Ziprazidone)
Haldol (Haloperidol)
Cogentin (Benztropine)
The student should educate themselves regarding which medications can be given together,
when Lithium would be given with another medication to treat bipolar mania, which medications
come in an injectable solution, and when is it appropriate to give a client PRN medications.
Remember that teaching will be done with the patient during simulation. Please present
the information in patient friendly language. No printed information from the internet or
photocopied information from a drug book will be accepted.
