BES 025-STATICS OF RIGID BODIESS

ASSIGNMENT 1 ( 20 points each)

1. The force system shown in Figure 1 has a resultant of 200 lb pointing up along the Y-axis.
Compute the values of F and Ɵ required to give this resultant.

2. The block shown in Figure 2 is acted on by its weight W= 400 lb, a horizontal force F= 600 lb, and
the pressure P exerted by the inclined plane. The resultant R of these forces is parallel to the
incline. Determine P and R. Does the block move up or down the incline?

3. Two locomotives on opposite banks of a canal pull a vessel moving parallel to the banks by
means of two horizontal ropes. The tensions in these ropes are 3000 lb and 4400 lb while the
angle between them is 60°. Find the resultant pull on the vessel and the angle between each of
the ropes and the sides of the canal.

4. Determine the resultant of the system of concurrent forces having the following magnitudes and
passing through the origin and the indicated points: P=280 lb (+12,+6,-4); T=520 lb (-3,-4, +12);
and F=270 lb (+6,-3,-6).

5. Three concurrent forces P,T, and F have a resultant of 10 lb directed forward and up to the right
at Ɵx=60°, Ɵy=60°, Ɵz=45°. P equals 21 lb and passes from the origin through point (3,2,6). The
value of T is 18 lb and is directed from the origin toward point (-6,6,-3). Determine the
magnitude of the third force F and the angles it makes with the reference axes.
