Dismounting procedure for cooling jacket of cylinder cover
Section Chief N. Inoue
Drawn By S. Umeno
ENGINE TYPE S35MC Mark7, S42MC

Usually, a cooling jacket for a cylinder cover can be dismounted by unscrewing all bolts for holding
the jacket to the cylinder cover. In addition, except for S42MC Mark7, the jacket has some bolt holes
for jacking up itself, and the jacket can be dismounted easily by using M16 bolts as a dismantling
screw when the dismounting is difficult due to sticking the jacket, and so on.
However, if there is a lot of sludge, rust and/or any corrosion in the jacket, there is a possibility that
the jacket cannot be dismounted even if the tool is used. For such occasions, we would like to inform
of the effective procedure for dismounting the jacket as follows.

Regarding cooling water, we assume that poor control of cooling water quality makes the
dismounting difficulty because if water chemistry control is no problem, the jacket can be
dismounted without any problem. Therefore, we recommend that cooling water system is checked,
and if necessary, please improve the control of the water. Regarding the control of cooling water
quality, please refer to our service note “MWSN-004” for details.

■Special tool
For our method of dismounting the cylinder jacket, some special screw jacks are needed. Please
refer to the following list for information about the necessary parts for the screw jack. After edge
welding between M24 nut and SGP, please assemble the screw jack as Fig. 1. S35MC engine
requires 2 screw jacks for the following method. And, S42MC engine requires 4 screw jacks.

□Necessary parts
•M24 bolt (length of screw part : more than 55 mm)
•M24 nut
•Steel Gas Pipes (25A) S35MC … about 40 mm, S42MC … about 70 mm

■Method of dismounting
•In the case of S35MC (Please refer to Fig. 2 and 3.)

Please put in the screw jack between the cylinder cover and the flange for water connection pipe
and jack up 2 screw jacks and 2 dismantling screws carefully and evenly. (about 15 mm) And,
the jacket can be removed easily.

•In the case of S42MC (Please refer to Fig. 4 and 5.)

Please put in the screw jack between a cylinder cover and a flange for water connection pipe
and jack up 4 screw jacks carefully and evenly. (about 15 mm)
