An operating instruction for a rupture disc Dept. Manager K. Kubo

Drawn By S. Umeno
ENGINE TYPE All types

A marine engine has various equipment for safety in order to defend crew’s security and avoid any
risk of critical damage to the engine, one of them has a “rupture disc”, also known as bursting disc,
which is kind of pressure relief device, is installed on a branch pipe for starting air.
Though the “rupture disc” is one of important device for a marine engine by reason of crew’s
security and early detection of abnormality of starting valve, there is no instruction regarding a
rupture disc on a main engine instruction book.
Therefore, we summarized an operating instruction for a rupture disc and inform you as follows.

1. Structure and purpose

Rupture discs are installed on branch pipes for starting air. If the inner pressure of starting air
pipe becomes more than 6.0 MPa due to counter flow of the high pressure combustion gas or
compressed air caused by a starting valve sticking up, the disc ”C1” in the rupture disc is
ruptured and blow off high pressure air from the blow hole on the cap ”C3 ” and the cylinder
“C5”. And so, any critical damage to the starting air system may be avoided, and counter flow of
high pressure combustion gas can be found quickly.

2. A word of caution for the operation

a. The blow holes of the cap should be set on the opened position (Photo 1). If the blow holes
are set on closed position, abnormality of starting valve cannot be detected. After the wing
nut “C8” is loosened, the opening and closing of the blow holes can be carried out by turning
the cap “C3”.

b. The blow holes should be entirely covered by the cover “C9”. When the disc “C1” is
ruptured, the cylinder which any malfunction is happened can be detected easily by reason
of high pressure air distorts the cover as wings.

3. Treatment when the disc is ruptured

If the disc “C1” is ruptured, it should be renewed. After removing the root cause of the relevant
starting valve, please remove the cap “C3” and the cylinder “C5”. And, you can renew the disc
“C1” in the casing “C2”. At the time, if the washer “C4” is distorted, we recommend that the
washers are also renewed. A disc “C1” has been supplied as the M/E spare parts. When
reassembling, please tighten the cylinder “C5” with the cap “C3” by using a torque wrench. The
tightening torque is 90 Nm.

4. Emergency measure

If the main engine starting is given priority over the above replacing the disc “C1”, Please close
the cap”C3” in order to cover in the blow holes. And, lowering of starting performance due to
starting air leaking can be prevented.
But, if the cap “C3” is closed, there is no possible that sticking starting valve is found. In
addition, if the treatment of drain generated by compressor is not enough, oily drain might be
ignited by leaking high temperature exhaust gas from the starting valve. Therefore, any
ruptured disc should be renewed at the earliest possible opportunity in order to get an
understanding of the starting valve condition.
