The method of concrete mix design consists of selection of optimum proportions water, cement,
fine and coarse aggregates and admixture to produce concrete of specified properties most
economically. The proportion of concrete mix is obtained by experimentally evolved relationship
between the factors in the choice of mix design It provides reasonably accurate guide to arrive
at an optimum proportion of ingredients. The final mix proportions are obtained on the basis of
trial mixes. The mix design has been carried out as par the stipulations of Indian Standard
keeping in view the recommended standard deviation and target mean strength. The details of
the method of concrete mix design has been extensively discussed in Standard Text Books , 1 S
Code and other publications . Based on the method of Concrete Mix Design, the trial mixes
have been obtained. The fine and coarse aggregates have been proportioned suitably to obtain
recommended grading of combined coarse aggregates..On the basis trial mixes cast with
materials supplied by the client and the results of workability and 07/28 days strength obtained,
the mix proportion have been suitably modified successively based on experience and the
‘method of mix design as detailed in references to arrive at an optimum mix proportion which is
given Table — 1. It satisfy the requirements of the desired workability and 7/28 days strength for
concrete
Quantity of water may be adjusted depending upon the weather condition to get the desired
workability. The recommended quantity of water is for the saturated surface dry condition. the
recommended mix proportions account for the moisture content of the coarse and fine
‘aggregates supplied for trial mixed. At site, moisture content of aggregates may be different
depending on weather condition. Therefore, adjustment for water content should be made at
site to get desired workability. Water/cement ratio shall remain constant,
Quantity of plasticizer ( if used ) may be adjusted to achieve desired workability for variation in
particle shape and texture of aggregates.
Trial mix at site should be made to check thee workability and strength of concrete under site
condition before the work.
Water used for mixing and curing shall be clean and free from injurious amounts of oils, acids,
alkalis, salts, sugar, organic materials or other substances that may be deleterious to conerete
or steel. Potable water is generally considered satisfactory for mixing concrete. As a guide, it
should satisfy the req nts giyen in IS: 3025 ( Part 22 & 23).
