“The history of a nation can be learned in its constitution, its laws, and its political statements. But to
know the history of a nation’s spirit, you must read its literature.” (Croghan, 1977)

The main purpose of the study of Philippine literature is to reveal the Filipino spirit embedded in it.
Through literature, Filipinos’ deepest and most profound experiences are articulated in words which can
create a myriad of unforgettable images of their country’s history. Philippine literature serves as a mirror of the
feelings and ideas of Filipinos as we face adversities, triumph, joy, anxieties, and other human experiences.
For example, the impression of precolonial life is embedded in the folktales and folksongs orally passed from
one generation to another. The image of Filipino society during the colonial period is painted in the countless
novels, poems, biographies, and journals written during and after the period. The birth of fresh and innovative
ideas is revealed in dramas, autobiographies, and memoirs when the country gained independence.
Contemporary times have also revealed the effects of globalization on Filipinos’ daily lives and cultural
expressions.

It is then worthwhile to study Philippine literature against the backdrop of historical events. Keeping in
touch with our history not only makes us realize our uniqueness among other races but also allows us to feel
connected with them through our realization of common experiences.
