Technology‐enhanced Learning
Definition:
The term Technology‐enhanced learning (TEL) is used to describe the application of technology to
teaching and learning. It is a broad category that isn’t particularly defined, but, in short, TEL is any
technology that enhances the learning experience.
Why is Technology‐enhanced Learning Important?
Technology‐Enhanced Learning (TEL) is important for many reasons. It is not only important
because it is the standard of education that is expected today, but it can also improve education.
The section below explores TEL’s importance in more detail.
Kids can learn at their own pace:
We know that kids learn at their own pace, and sometimes the traditional classroom makes
it difficult to do so. Technology in education enables children to adjust to their own pace
of learning. Students who need extra time can spend more time going over exercises until
they understand, whilst students who need less support can continue ahead. It also frees
up the teacher to help kids who need more support on an individual level.
More resources:
With TEL, educators are no longer limited to the textbooks that their institutions provide.
By using other resources such as video, audio and interactive learning, students have many
different ways to learn. Teachers can find creative ways to teach their students in an
engaging way. Technology has changed the learning environment so that learning is more
hands‐on.
Technology keeps kids engaged:
Children often struggle to stay on task or interested, particularly if it is not interactive. TEL
can make even the most mundane school tasks more engaging, which will help your
students to stay focused.
Technology is necessary to succeed in the real world:
The reality is that it is almost impossible to survive the working world without technology.
Therefore, it is better if children learn how to use tech sooner rather than later. Arguably,
being computer literate is more important than some of the more traditional skills that are
taught in schools.

Theory Notes
A large part of technology’s growing influence on society is the introduction of online learning
and online courses. There are many tutorials available on websites such as YouTube, and more
educationally oriented sites like Lynda.com. There is no shortage of people willing to teach and
learn online through small courses on websites such as Codecademy for learning computer
coding, or offering accredited courses on websites such as Coursera and Udacity. This means that
people can now gain access to teaching often without a fee, other than the cost of their internet
connection. This also means they are able to learn at their own pace and in their own time.
One of the biggest online learning methods is through the use of Massive Ppen Online Courses
(MOOC). These are courses that are not limited in the number of people that can access them
and have open access using the web. MOOCs are mostly free and will be used by a large number
of learners of a topic at any one time. They will often include filmed lectures and other resources,
and have forums that can be used to interact with other learners and the educators. MOOCs allow
people in similar industries to learn more about their industry from other people within that
industry. They allow this to happen at the convenience of the learner.
