If you fail to complete this summative assessment in class, you can submit it later only
if a medical report is submitted. Date due:
Goal
Your goal is to design a nutritional bar that will provide the proper balance of protein and
carbohydrates for one of two target populations (rescue workers and patients). You need to take into
consideration 3 factors: metabolic needs of the population, taste, and cost. You will design a recipe for
a health bar that addresses the needs of one of the populations (rescue workers or patients) while
maximizing the taste score and minimizing cost.

Role
You are a food engineer intern working at Futura Engineering (a United Arab Emirates non-profit
firm)

Audience
Your audience will be the head engineers. They will be choosing one of each type of bar (rescue
workers and patients) to go into production to help out next time there is a natural disaster.

Situation
Natural disasters (floods, earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, tsunamis, typhoons, etc.) are becoming
more frequent and affecting more people than ever before. Getting people food in these situations is
hard and only adds to these disasters. The UAE had decided that they will do something about it.
They will fund the research and development of supplement bars to send to countries experiencing
these disasters. The bars will be easy to drop into by airplanes into areas when the roads have been
damaged, they won’t spoil or rot like food does, and they will be packaged so they won’t get ruined if
they get wet. Two different bars will be produced one for patients and one for rescue workers. This
way the UAE will be ready to help immediately next time disaster strikes.

Product
Your report must include the following explanations:
 Does the bar meet the nutrimental needs of your chosen population?
 How good does your bar taste. (You want this to be high as possible)
 How much does your bar cost. (You want this number to be as low as possible)

Your presentation should be in the form of a Power Point. You need to include the following in your
presentation:
 A name for your bar and a package design.
 An explanation of how it meets the nutritional needs of your chosen population.
 How well it scores in the taste test.
 Results from the test groups
 How much will it cost to make a bar, and how many people can you serve with the budget of
$10,000.
 If you needed to sacrifice one of these 3 things, why did you choose that category and what are
the pros and cons of that choice.

Standards
MS-LS1-7 From Molecules to Organisms: Structures and Processes

Develop a model to describe how food is rearranged through chemical reactions forming new
molecules that support growth and/or release energy as this matter moves through an organism.

Instructions:

1. Fill out the answers to the questions on this report and submit
this with your final presentation.
2. Cite all your sources (websites or books where you found
information) if you used any using MLA style.
3. Make a Power-Point

Questions to include in your presentation:
