1. OBJECTIVE
To understand the relationship between force, mass, acceleration
2. THEORY
Newton’s Laws are based on the experimental studies of moving bodies. They are
fundamental laws of nature; cannot be deduced or proved from any other principles.
Force gives a quantitative description of interaction between two bodies or between a
body and its environment. Its magnitude describes “how much” or “how hard” the force
pushes or pulls. Newton’s first law states that “everybody continues in its states of rest,
or of uniform motion in a straight line, unless it is compelled to change that state by
forces impressed upon it”.
But when the resultant force is NOT zero, the body has and acceleration. And the
relationship between force and acceleration is known as Newton’s second law of motion
∑ F =ma
This is the fundamental law of nature the basic relation between force and motion. The
equation above is a vector equation and a separate equation for each component of force
and the corresponding acceleration:

a. Ensure the screw of the incline plane is properly secured during the experiment
