QUESTION 1
a) A 16 tooth pinion has a module of 3 mm and runs at a speed of 1450 rev/min. The
driven gear has 40 teeth. Find;

QUESTION 2
a)
(i) Explain the types of belt which can be used to change the direction of axis of
rotation?

b) A friction stainless steel metal belt runs over 100 mm metal pulleys (f = 0.35). The
belt has a thickness of 0.08 mm for a life exceeding 106 belt passes with smooth
torque (Ks =1),
(i) select a suitable belt if the torque is to be 3.5 Nm
(ii) find the initial tension F1

(i) Flat belt & Round belt (0.5M + 0.5M) – change of rotation from horizontal to
vertical or vice versa (0.5M + 0.5M)
(ii) Main requirement – gear or groove. (1M) Connection between crank shaft and
camshaft. (1M +1M)

QUESTION 3
b) A 16-tooth pinion drives the double-reduction spur-gear train in the Figure Q3i. All
gears have 25° pressure angles. The pinion rotates counter clockwise at 1200 rpm
and transmits power to the gear train. The shaft has not yet been designed but the
free bodies have been generated as shown in Figure Q3ii. Altogether there are six
bearings in the gear system. The shaft speeds are 1200 rpm, 240 rpm, and 80 rpm. A
bearing study is commencing with a 10-kh life and a gearbox bearing ensemble
reliability of 0.99, assuming distribution data from manufacturer 2 in Table 11–6. An
application factor of 1.2 is appropriate. For each shaft, specify a matched pair of 02-
series cylindrical roller bearings from Table 11–3.

Three examples of the phenomenon are a contact of gear teeth, rolling bearings and in
cam-and-follower surfaces.
