PALLIKARANAI MARGAZHI
THIRUVIZHA
DECEMBER 18, 2021 - JANUARY 9, 2022 | 7 AM

Margazhi is momentous for the city in more ways than one.

Synonymous with performing arts in Chennai, the Tamil
month coincides with the bird migratory calendar with
Chennai’s wetlands playing hosts to thousands of birds.

Following the success of the Margazhi Bird Utsav in 2019 and

2020, the Tamil Nadu Forest Department and the
Conservation authority of Pallikaranai Marshland in
association with Care Earth Trust are delighted to present
the third edition of the immersive birdwatching experience
this Decemeber - January.

Being the best season to watch birds, participants will be

able to observe and identify resident and migrant wetland
birds.

GUIDED WALKS

The bird migratory season coincides with post-monsoon

months when the marsh and its satellite wetlands are full.
Chennai's wetlands serve as nesting and breeding grounds
for both transboundary and local migratory species. Bird
watchers will be treated to large groups of flamingoes and
painted storks as they throng the wetlands during the
migratory season. It would also be possible to observe
aquatic birds such as the fulvous whistling duck and grey-
headed lapwing that are otherwise not so common in the
state.
