WORK EXPERIENCE
Write about an obstacle in life that has helped to shape you into the person you are
today.
Obstacles in life
Life is like a big school; you get tested constantly, and you experience obstacles daily,
and the way you handle those obstacles determines the way your life goes on and what kind of
person you will be. I have come across many obstacles, some that I have dealt with the way I felt
I should have, some that I have dealt with in ways that I see now were not exactly the best.
Nevertheless, obstacles teach you valuable lessons in each obstacle has its lesson that you need
Reid 7
to figure out. My first life-altering/shattering obstacle happened when I was nine years old. I
waited for what seemed like forever to be blessed with a sibling, and when my mom and dad
finally announced that they were pregnant, I knew my life would change forever. I spent nine
months rubbing my mom's belly; my baby sister would start kicking when she heard my voice. I
was convinced that she knew exactly who I was, and I felt our bond. I was super excited about
my upcoming role of being a big sister. I would think of all the things I would teach her, how I
would protect her, and how much fun it would be to have someone look up to me and hang on to
my every word. Early Thanksgiving morning, my mom's water broke, and she and my dad
rushed to the hospital. I was sent with my grandparents, excitedly awaiting the arrival of my
baby sister. But that day never happened; my baby sister never came home. She was 9lbs with
perfect test scores, according to the doctors. But something unexplainable happened between the
hours of my mom's water breaking and labor that separated my sister's umbilical cord from my
mom's belly button, which deprived my baby sister of oxygen. The doctors called it a freak
accident. For eight days, I would visit my baby sister who had been medivac, to Children's
National Medical Center. She was the biggest baby in the NICU, and I just knew that she would
recover and be coming home soon. The doctors tried everything they could, but my mom and
dad had to make the hardest decision of their lives and remove her from the machine. Nine
months of imagining life being a big sister and I was only a big sister for eight days. I was
supposed to protect her, but I could not protect her from this. I was supposed to teach her things,
but now that day would never come. My mom told me that God needed her in heaven, and I
remember asking mom as I cried uncontrollably in her arms, "why couldn't god wait for her like
he is waiting for us? Why did he have to take her now." I didn't know how to grasp losing
someone, let alone losing my sister. But I saw the sadness in my mother's eyes, and I wanted to
be strong for her. Silly me thought my strength would lessen her pain. So, I decided not to cry
anymore around her and tried my best to act as nothing happened. I thought if I did not seem sad,
then no one would know how much pain I was in, and if I did not show my feelings, no one
would ask questions. This was the start of me internalizing my pain, not posing my sadness to
Reid 8
others, and putting other feelings before my own. So, for years I kept my pain internalized until I
was alone. When there was no one around, I let myself be vulnerable. I realized quickly that it
was not healthy for me to internalize things. I realized that I could not be strong for anyone but
myself. I realized there was nothing I could have done to protect my baby sister from what she
went through. I realize that the eight I had with her was something that I would soon cherish
forever. I remember coloring pictures for her and placing them around the wall in her room in the
Most importantly, I realized that I am a big sister. I am a big sister to an angel in heaven.
Through it all, I realized that life is not always easy, but you must be strong, resilient, and
cherish the moments and the people you have while you have them.
This artifact reflects my grade junior year when I reached my goal of a 4.1 gpa.
