Demograhic

1. There are two googleforms for the survey. One was 100% filled by respondents in
Pulau Penang, and the other one was also 100% filled by respondents in Selangor.
2. Majority of the respondents for Penang and Selangor are from the age group of 20-
29 years old.
3. Majority of the respondents for both states are female.
4. Majority of the respondents for both states live far away from the nearest river.
5. Majority of the respondents for both states have lived in their houses for more than
5 years.
6. Majority of the respondents for both states come from B40 group which has a range
of household income from RM 0 to RM 4,859.
7. Majority of the respondents for both states are having 3 to 5 household members.
8. Majority of the respondents for both states are students.

This survey was conducted based on the views of students in Penang and Selangor. Since
students are having online classes nowadays, so we want to know on how far the students
understand about their water source and how bad was their water source. To further
ensure the effectiveness of these surveys, we asked on their demography to relate their
quality of answering and their backgrounds. Normally, females would be more mature in
thinking than male at the adolescence. Therefore, we approached more females than males
to enhance the effectiveness of these surveys. We also asked on how long they have been
living in their houses. This is to ensure that they are more understand on their areas. Most
of the respondents are citizens where they need to drive to the nearest river. This could
mean that the odour pollution from the rivers would not be a concern to them.
Furthermore, we asked on how many household members do they have. This is to know the
average of how many people are confronting use water pollution issue. The income-based
question was to know on how wealthy they are. This is because normally people would
think that rich people tend to not concern about water pollution that much as they are able
to solve this problem by other methods, like buying bottled drinking water from stores or by
installing large tanks for water supply at their houses. Furthermore, for average and below
average income people tend to solve for the water pollution issue instead. Therefore, it
would be wiser to approach the average and below average income people as they could
have better thoughts than the high-income people.

Majority respondents for both states stated that the water is not safe to drink if the look,
taste and the smell of the water is different from usual. This method helps a bit in
determining whether the water is clean, but as for an overall evaluation in the safety of the
water, all of the four main answers should be concerned to ensure that the water we are
drinking is actually safe to drink. From this chart, we can know that the respondents from
both states were mainly relying on the appearance of the water to determine on its safety,
rather than checking on the contents and the quality of the water from the quality reports
provided by the DOE. This means that the respondents were not taking the safety of the
drinking water into account and this may be caused by the over trusting on the water
suppliers.

From this chart, the respondents in Selangor are more towards the industrial effluent waste
and the illegal dumping. This is because the causes of the recent water pollution issue
happened in Selangor were basically due to industrial wastes and dumping as well. For the
respondents in Penang, they tend to select discharge of domestic water as their majority
answer as there is no serious water pollution issue happened in Penang and therefore, they
might tend to think of the river pollution might be caused by the domestic wastes as a major
factor.

The answers based on the x-axis on the chart are all correct options, but most of the
respondents for both states chose to report to the DOE as they might think that this should
be the best way to cope with this problem. As for writing a report was a chairman’s
responsibility, might be because of this, they tended not to select this option as their
answer. As an overall view on this chart, the respondents are quite civilized as majority of
them tended to select all of these four main answers as their ways to overcome river
pollution. Furthermore, there are only a few respondents who responded as “don’t know”.
So, this also means that the respondents are well aware of their current situation and they
are well understood in terms of solving the river pollution issue.

From this chart, we can clearly see that the respondents from Selangor had difficulties in
terms of confronting the water cut issue recently. On the other hand, the respondents from
Penang answered averagely for each option. This could mean that some of the respondents
from Penang were in Selangor during that period of time causing this particular batch of
people to suffer from the recent water cut issue as well.
In short, people in Selangor are having bigger problems on water pollution than
people in Penang as there are many industrial sites in Selangor. Furthermore, the
population in Selangor is greater than that in Penang. Therefore, the fact that water cut and
water pollution issues have a great impact on the people in Selangor is accepted.
