The study is all about the pollution in Sta. Ana Public Market and its impacts on
the health of people around it. The researchers focused on the water pollution seen in the
nearby creek because it is reported to be the main cause of disease in the area. The study
aimed to describe the effects of improper waste disposal to the health conditions of the
people in order to be of help to the citizens of Barangay Sta. Lucia. The researchers aimed
to raise awareness and provide more knowledge to the vendors and market goers as they
are most affected in the said water pollution. The researchers conducted an interview
among 10 vendors and nearby residents to describe the current situation in their area.
Results show that the improper waste disposal of the public market has caused diseases in
the vicinity as it also attracts different pests that disturb the normal lives of the people and
bring about illnesses through viruses in and near the market. This shows that improper
waste disposal has an impact on the health conditions of the people in Brgy. Sta. Lucia,
Sta. Ana, Pampanga.

I. Problem and its Background
Background Information
According to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, a community is described to be a
unified body of individuals. A community works together hand in hand to be of betterment
to one another. A disruption in this union can cause a community to fail in performing its
basic functions. Improper waste segregation is one of the causes that disrupts the normal
living conditions of a community. This happens when waste materials are not segregated
and thrown in their proper places, this then causes pollution in the area. Pollution is the
environmental contamination of human made waste. Public markets are one of the places
where jobs and local trades of the community are found, but it is also one of the most prone
places where pollution can take place. Sta. Ana Public Market is one of the largest markets
in Pampanga, where the creek beside it is heavily polluted by waste produced by the
market. This then causes the disruption of the local community because of its foul smell
and contaminated waters. This has also caused alarm to their local government officials as
certain diseases, such as diarrhea and vomiting, flourishes unto people that could be
obtained through direct and indirect contact with the polluted waters. In accordance to this
is the Republic Act 9003 or the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000 which
protects public and environmental health, promotes the proper disposal of wastes and
programs to support this, and the engagement of the community to be of part in reaching
its objectives. The study aims to show the possible negative effects of the improper waste
disposal of Sta. Ana Public Market to the affected area and the community surrounding it.
The researchers from Holy Family Academy also aim to find possible solutions to the
problem for the betterment of the community in Sta. Ana and affected areas around it. This
is a very timely and relevant topic because water pollution is one of the biggest problems
worldwide. Objectives are to familiarize the locals of the cause and effects of the water
pollution in their area. Other factors such as sanitary permits, waste segregation programs,
and the like will also be observed. However, this will not be of priority as the researchers
will focus to determine and observe whether the improper waste disposal causes different
health problems in the vicinity. Additionally, the cleaning of the creek and the checking of
sanitary permits will no longer be conducted by the researchers because of the research’s
limitations. The study is to be completed within the timeframe the researchers are given.

Review of Related Literature

According to a research by Idris et al. (2004), many developing countries in Asia

especially the Philippines is faced with serious problems in managing their waste disposal
practices. The annual waste dismissed by Asians is increasing due to the growing
population and urbanization in Asian countries. Greater rural populations produced more
organic waste, such as kitchen waste and fewer recyclable materials like paper, metal, and
plastic. Rapid development and changing lifestyles in growing cities has also changed
waste composition from mainly organic to mainly plastics, paper, and packaging materials
that are dangerous in nature. Storage and collection systems are also becoming more
developed and costly because the types and sources of waste produced has become
diversified and the availability of disposal sites within the collection areas has become
limited.

Additionally, the study of Manuel et al. (2015) states that plastic waste and its use
continues to increase. Plastic bags can also contaminate foodstuffs due to leaching of toxic
dyes and transfer of pathogens. This disturbs the soil microbe activity, and once ingested,
can kill organisms. Despite the hazardous effects of plastic, the study discovered that a
significant number of adults had inadequate knowledge on hazards of plastic waste and its
disposal.

Supporting this is the research of Kumar et al. (2009), which found out that
improper waste disposal is one of the most challenging and major problems that a country
can face. As stated by Boadi and Kuitunen (2005), one factor is due to the increasing
consumption of resources to satisfy the needs and wants of the people and results to the
large quantity of waste in the country. Africa has deplorable living conditions because of
weak institutional capacities and services. Also, this country lacks resources. About 20%-
80% of solid waste are placed and thrown away to different places like open spaces, water
bodies and surface drains that results to insufficient underlying framework.

According to Sharholy et al. (2007), proper storage of solid waste within municipalities
is what urban areas lack most. Ideally, it is provided that there are bins for both
decomposable and non-decomposable waste which will be disposed at a certain disposal

centers. This then applies in most cities in India such as Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore and
many more in an effort to organize house-to-house collections. They have also employed
NGOs to supervise house-to-house collection to monitor that the trash is well segregated
in areas not reached by the government. It was also mentioned that the solid waste
management in India is creating risks to the public health and its environment because 90%
of these wastes are dumped in open landfills.

As studied by Giusti (2009), it is inevitable that human activities have always generated
waste. This was not a major issue when the human population was relatively small, but
became a serious problem with urbanization and the growth of urban area. Poor
management of waste can lead to the contamination of water, soil, and atmosphere and thus
creating a major impact to public health. The mass of waste produced in the world has been
growing for many decades especially in affluent countries. Recent estimates suggest that
the municipal solid waste alone generated globally exceeded 2 billion tons per year in the
turn of millennium. Despite important technological advancements, and regulatory systems
in waste management, and more advanced health surveillance, the public acceptance of the
location of new waste disposal and treatment facilities is still very low due to the concern
about the adverse effects to the environment and human health. Indirect health effects due
to the contribution of greenhouse gases from waste disposal activities could be significant.
Rising temperatures due to climate change would affect old people with cardiovascular
problems and both old and young people with respiratory problems such as asthma.

According to Misra and Pandey (2004), the wastes that are disposed by humans can
lead to potential hazards that can harm the health of an individual. When garbage is not
properly segregated, stored, and treated, health and environmental issues are prone to
happen. According to Manyele (2004), these environmental problems can arise from the
handling, treatment, and disposal of waste. In addition, various threats and unhealthy
actions can occur like poor storage in high temperatures that may cause infectious diseases.

Studies have shown that improper waste disposal is positively correlated with drainage
systems. According to World Health Organization (WHO), an agency of the United
Nations that is concerned with international public health, expressed that one important
way of reducing environment health diseases is by removing storm water and sullage.

8
THE IMPACT OF IMPROPER WASTE DISPOSAL OF THE MARKET TO THE

PAMPANGA
WHO said that the main cause of stagnant water that leads to provide breeding sites of
diseases is due to accumulated storm water. It is also said that cholera and typhoid can
spread due also to accumulated storm water that has feces that can contaminate water
sources (Kolsky, 1998). Pathogen, a virus that can cause a disease, can be found in sullage
that can pollute groundwater. Because of this, it can increase the risk of diseases such as
lymphatic filariasis.

According to Wu et al. (1999) several possible consequences for public health, number
of deaths and diseases may continue to increase. In the study that was conducted by the
National Environmental Policy Act in the 1980s, they discovered and found that water
pollution in a particular place that causes damage to human health, mostly occur in
intestinal diseases.

According to Aye (2006) waste from traditional markets in Indonesia is the second
largest stream after household waste which has a high percentage of organic matter. One
of the reasons for this is because of improper handling of food products and other
biodegradable waste. This waste contains bad bacteria that can harm the customers who
buys in the market possibly through contaminated and unclean produce. Children who go
to the market can get also diseases like diarrhea, salmonella and etc.

Population in the Philippines continues rise, and according to the study of Goel (2006),
survival comes along with pollution; meaning that pollution hinders chances of survival
within an area.

Statement of the Problem

Knowing all the given information, it is useful to study and investigate the impact
of improper waste disposal to the health of individuals involved. The study intends to know
the health conditions of the people who work and live in or nearby the public market. In
addition, the research aims to determine if the improper waste disposal of the market is
associated with the health conditions of the people in Barangay Sta. Lucia, Sta. Ana,
Pampanga.

II. Methodology
This part of the research aims to determine the respondents to be part of the study. This
will also state what kind of data gathering will be executed.

Research Design

The researchers will use a qualitative research design to gather information about the health
conditions of the people in Sta. Ana Pampanga and how the different practices of the
market vendors pertaining their waste disposal can be a factor to the welfare of the
community. Under qualitative, they have chosen a descriptive type of research design to
further elaborate the phenomenon happening in Brgy. Sta. Lucia, Sta. Ana, Pampanga.

Sampling Procedure

The target respondents of the researchers are the vendors and people who live around the
vicinity of the polluted creek. Quota Sampling will be used to determine the needed
respondents. A total of 10 respondents will be needed in order to record information. In
this current study, the target respondents of the researchers are the people within and near
Sta. Ana Public Market.

Data Gathering

The researchers will gather the viewpoints and experiences of the respondents though an
interview regarding how they are being affected by the improper waste disposal. Also, the
researchers will ask the respondents about the possible impact of improper waste disposal
to the health conditions of people in Sta. Ana, Pampanga. In the gathering process the
following materials will be used: laptop, phone, printer, pen and paper. A phone will be
used as a voice recorder and camera. A pen and paper to list down the observations about
the surroundings. Lastly, a laptop and printer to produce the final output.

III. Results and Interpretation of Data

Results and Discussion

The interview has shown the following results and observations. The segregation
of waste based on their composition is divided into two parts: biodegradable and the non-
biodegradable. Most of the stalls and places in the public market is provided with proper
trash bins for both non- biodegradable and biodegradable waste. For some however, only
have one trash bin that is used for both types of wastes. Although there are proper places
to for waste disposal, there is still an observable amount of people who do not follow such
program and protocol in throwing their trash. This is observed in places where there are
trash bins but there is a visible amount of trash lying around the area. The collection of
waste in Sta. Ana Public Market is done twice a day on a daily basis – in the morning and
afternoon, respectively.

The people around the public market and their families as well make ways in
reducing the amount of trash they produce and throw out. They clean their respective areas
even though there are people who are already tasked to sweep around the market. They
also have their own trash bin at their homes and other than the collection of trash some are
either buried in soil or burned.

According to the respondents, the government officials or the barangay council

have laws and programs regarding their waste segregation. However, most of the time these
rules are not followed. Some trash is left uncollected and sometimes seen being scavenged
or scattered by stray cats and dogs.

People are observed as careless in their environmental responsibility and just leave
their trash lying around and unsegregated. Vendors usually see other vendors who just
leave their waste as it is and is seen as people with no consideration for their neighboring
stalls. It has been said that a lot of these people in the marketplace are hard headed and do
not care about the cleanliness of the said area. A vendor also described their residential are
as clean, but for their stall in the marketplace, they would try to keep tidy but the market
goers and customers from a nearby Jollibee tend to be insensitive and just throw as they

13

PAMPANGA
will in front of market stalls. One out of ten respondents admitted that she, herself, litters
in their area.

The heavily polluted creek waters right beside the market has been observed and
said to be causing a very foul smell to people who are in the vicinity. This pollution is also
felt in the air and observably seen in large areas of the market. It has been seen that this
causes illnesses and diseases to people who are often exposed to this environment. This
has caused stomachaches, headaches, and even difficulty in breathing. The creek is
sometimes cleaned, but the foul odor really reaches residential areas surrounding the
market.

Pests are even often seen and encountered as to a dirty environment usually attracts
these organisms. Cockroaches, rats, flies, and even mosquitoes are the most common of
these pests. They inflict diseases due to the bacteria and viruses they bring. There are also
times that dead cats are seen and left to rot without no one bothering to dispose of it, causing
a foul smell due to its decomposition.

The health of people around the market and creek is said to be impacted by the
improper waste disposal of the market causing pollution to the creek and thus attracting
disease carrying organisms. Some is said to have eczema in their feet due to exposure to
pollution. Headaches are also normal for the vendors. Diarrhea is also accumulated due to
the consumption of contaminated food. Some vendors did not yet experience any of these,
but are expecting to do so due to their observation of the unclean environment in the area.
There are also some diseases that are usually common and are already expected by the
market vendors. These are fever, dengue, and some skin diseases such as eczema and fungi.

The people in the market sees the importance of segregating their waste and
disposing them properly as this impacts their daily living and livelihood. They are aware
that a clean environment can drastically impact the community towards better health. They
are urged to clean their surroundings in their barangay as long as their officials encourage
them to. A healthy body is also recognized as their need and priority as they cannot do their
normal work without it. Awareness is also seen as a need specially to those who do not yet
know how to properly dispose their wastes. The respondents also see the need to not only

14
THE IMPACT OF IMPROPER WASTE DISPOSAL OF THE MARKET TO THE
HEALTH CONDITIONS OF PEOPLE IN BRGY. STA LUCIA, STA. ANA,
PAMPANGA
clean the environment, but also in their bodies as these are connected with one another.
They also see the need of their community to be one in keeping their area clean as to this
can impact almost everybody. They also said that cleanliness should start at home and
directed outward to the community.

This shows that the market is really polluted due to improper waste disposal of the
people who interact within it and has caused illnesses to the citizens living in Brgy. Sta
Lucia.

15
THE IMPACT OF IMPROPER WASTE DISPOSAL OF THE MARKET TO THE
HEALTH CONDITIONS OF PEOPLE IN BRGY. STA LUCIA, STA. ANA,

IV. Conclusion

Conclusion

The researchers therefore conclude that the improper waste disposal is a great factor
in the propagation of different health problems such as diarrhea, fever, and skin diseases to
the people in Brgy. Sta. Lucia, Sta. Ana, Pampanga.

Recommendation

The researchers recommend that the proper waste disposal programs of the
government must be more strictly implemented in the area. Additionally, talks and other
means of propagation of awareness must also be executed in order to bring out knowledge
among the citizens. Market vendors and goers must also be monitored and must have an
imposed penalty for not following the proper way of disposing trash. For future researchers
who want to continue the said study may use a more experimental and quantitative
approach as given the luxury of time and resources, they may focus on studying different
bacteria found in the creek and how these cause illnesses to the community. Lastly, they
may also find ways in how they may further help the community in solving the problem
on improper waste disposal.
