Introduction

Background of the Study

For many people, particularly at the peak of quarantine, gardening became

an increasingly popular activity. Coping up with self-isolation, growing plants became

their comfort as well as, revisiting past pursuits to pass the time and keep their sanity. As

the demand for plants ignited due to the Covid-19 pandemic, pots, such as seedling pot

demand became high also.

Seedling pots are used in cultivating seedlings, perhaps 1 to 2 weeks old plants. Its

use as a plant nursery before being transplanted to the ground. These pots are commonly

made out of black plastic.

As mentioned previously, they are usually made from plastic. They might be

convenient to find and easier to use, but somehow, aren't eco-friendly. These plastics

contain dangerous substances and they will only contribute as litter, thus will end up

being on the landfill. Furthermore, plastics don't break down easily. Those will release

petrochemical and other bi-products that could harm living organisms.

Concerning this, the researchers want to determine an alternative way to avoid

using plastic seedling pots, which is seedling pots made from scratch papers.

The paper industry generates a large quantity of waste. Recycling paper as a pot

can help it lessen, moreover can save space in your house, workplace and landfills. It's

biodegradable and eco-friendly, as well as low cost, which could help as a sustainable

alternative for the farmers and planters.

Utilizing these, the researchers want to use old scratch papers as a biodegradable

pot, in view of the fact that it's low cost and the availability of it. The researcher will

conduct this study to determine the level of capability, efficiency, and potent.

Statement of the Problem

The main focus of this study is to determine the level of acceptability of seedling

pot made from old scratch papers.

Specifically, the study aims to answer the following questions:

1. What is the level of acceptability of seedling pot made from old scratch papers in

terms of appearance, and general acceptability?

2. What is the level of acceptability of seedling pot made from old scratch papers in

terms of its effect on our environment and general acceptability?

3. What is the level of acceptability of seedling pot made from old scratch papers in

terms of how durable it is and general acceptability?

4. What is the level of acceptability of seedling pot made from old scratch papers in

terms of how safe it is to the plant and environment and general acceptability?

Hypothesis

1. There is a significant difference between a pot made from plastic and a pot made

from old scratch paper with regards to efficiency, capability, and potent in

growing seedlings.

Theoretical Framework

Nowadays people are more into DIYs which can be great considering that

they can be easy and cheap to make, but everything has its advantages and disadvantages.

Let's take a seedling pot made from scratch papers as an example, it's a great thing to

have a seedling pot made from scratch papers, but does it have the durability, to

withstand the water poured in to sustain the plant?

As a matter of fact seedling pots made from scratch papers is widely used for plant

nursery only and for the plant to be soon transferred on the ground, so thinking that it is a

pot made out of paper it surely can't withstand the water that is poured in for the plant to

consume, but the fact that it can be made with very simple materials and making it is

time-efficient, the only solution to the problem is making it again for later seedlings.

Gardening became a popular pastime for many people, particularly during the

quarantine period. To cope with their loneliness, they turned to grow plants and revisiting

old hobbies to pass the time and maintain their sanity.

As the Covid-19 pandemic sparked a surge in plant production, so did the

demand for pots, such as seedling pots. Seedling pots are used to cultivate seedlings that

are one to two weeks old. Its function as a plant nursery before transplanting to the

ground. Seedling pots are frequently made of black plastic for some reason.

Conclusion

Seedling pots made from old scratch papers are easy to produce, and starting

seeds in them is an environmentally friendly use of the material because the paper

decomposes when the seedlings are transplanted. It is also can be accomplished by hand

and can be bought at a very cheap price at the market.

Significance of the Study

The results of this study about Seedling Pot made from Old Scratch Papers will

be beneficial to the following:

Consumers. They can benefit from it since the seedling pot is inexpensive and

eco-friendly

Homemakers. They can provide a charming seedling pot for their homes. The pot

could also stand as a decoration, but it won't stay long since it is merely a seedling pot,

yet it could still serve as a tiny decoration for your small garden. They can use this pot to

plant some well-known vegetables or fruit that they usually eat. They can save money

from buying vegetables or fruits from the supermarket since they already had their plant

or trees at home. Hence, they are sure that their food is safe to consume.

Plant lovers. They can benefit from it considering that it could be a lot easier for

them once they will transfer the plant to the soil. It will not be necessary for them to

5

remove the plant from the pot because the seedling pot made from paper will just

decompose on the soil since it is biodegradable.

Entrepreneur. This seedling pot could be an excellent product to market. Since it

is easy to make, it is also catchy to the eyes of people because of its appearance. They

construct it with colorful papers, therefore the pot turned out attractive. It is also cheap

when they sell it since they don't need to purchase new materials to construct the pot but

it requires them to have old papers and flour. Aside from that, it could be helpful to

everyone during this pandemic considering several people made planting their another

way of relieving stress.

Future Researchers. The results of this study can give them a new idea to innovate

other ideas on what they could make recyclable and eco-friendly materials as pot.

Research Methodology

Research Design

In the complementation of this study to be executed, the researchers used

experimental research. Shadish, Cook, and Campbell (2002) define an

experiment as “a study in which an intervention is deliberately introduced to

observe its effects”. In this study, we make use of old scratch paper to be tested.

The present study, being conducted followed a single group design, which

includes, three(3)numerous trials with different types of mixture.

Collection of Data

Based on our interviewees from the students of Sacred Heart Academy,

Gr.9 St. Catherine of Siena, seedling pots that are made from old scratch papers

open up a lot of opportunities to people who wanted to start a small business, to

people who are passionate about plants, and to those who love planting and

enjoyed doing the craft, since this product that we come up with, has a low cost

which people from low to high class can afford doing it and doesn't require a big

capital, it is easy to make, and it is eco friendly which means not only you can

keep doing what you love and what you are passionate about, you are also safe

from doing it because you are not harming the air we breathe.

Data Gathering Instrument

A Sensory Evaluation Score Sheet on a Modified Five-Point Hedonic

Rating Scale will be use by the researchers to gather data needed in this study.

Each replication of the seedling pot made from old scratch paper will be

evaluated with:

5 Extremely Liked

4 Liked

3 Neutral

2 Disliked

1 Extremely Disliked

Scores will be assigned for evaluating the finished products as to

appearance, aroma, taste, and general acceptability.

Based on SCIENTIFIC AMERICAN, In the U.S., each person uses an

average of 663 pounds of paper products each year. About 60 percent of paper

gets recycled (the rest ends up in landfills or other trash-disposal areas). Where

does that paper go when it gets recycled? A lot of it ends up as more paper!

Since paper is an easy material to recycle because, unlike plastic or metals, it

doesn't require extreme heat to melt it down to make it into a new form, the way

Data Processing Technique

It is pertinent to the researchers to carry out the level of significance of

the study. This will be subjected to descriptive and inferential statistics set at the

level of significance of =0.01. The following employs the statistical tools:

Mean: It implies average and it is the sum of a set of data divided by the

number of data. (Research-methology. com) This Identification of mean is

important in determining the acceptability of the seedling pot made from old

scratch paper in terms of, capability, efficiency, and potent.

The computed mean will be analyzed and interpreted using the arbitrary

scale:

Analysis of variance (ANOVA) or F-test: is one of the most

frequently used statistical methods in medical research. The need for ANOVA

arises from the error of alpha level inflation, which increases Type 1 error

probability (false positive) and is caused by multiple comparisons (Tae Kyun

Kim,2016). This will analyze the variance, false-positive reactions, and statistics,

with regards to the capability, efficiency, and potent.
