Mindfulness Breathing Exercises

These FOUR mindfulness breathing mats are designed to provide focus while kids are
engaged in calming down, whether in a take a break space or during class. Each can be
printed out and slipped in a plastic sleeve for durability.

The first three (infinite symbol, snail and maze) are specifically for kids to trace with their
own finger while they slowly breathe in and breathe out. It is extremely helpful to
demonstrate how to do this at a slow pace, rather than speeding through, and instructing
them on slow, deep breathing. It helps to do these as a whole group together, with
practice, before using these in a take a break space or independently.

The fourth (the hand) can be used the same way, or can be a visual for indicating using
one’s actual hand as a guide while breathing. Kids should breathe in and breathe out for
each finger, for a total of 5 repetitions. I like this for portability-we can stop anywhere,
anytime and just hold up our hand to use as our guide while we slowly breathe.

If you are using one of these in your take a break space, it is helpful to have a sand or
digital timer so they spend sufficient time in the exercise for it to have an impact. You can
also have them available in the classroom for kids to access-I find some kids are tracing
even while listening to me.
