PERFORMANCE TASK

GOAL To present valid proofs on the presence of random variables and

probability distributions, specifically in calculating the mean and the
variance and standard deviation of a discrete random variable.
ROLE You are a Math enthusiast
AUDIENCE The target audience are your classmates and professor in a
mathematics class
SITUATION The output involves showcasing the use of random variables and
probability distributions, specifically mean, variance and standard
deviation as applied to daily life situations.
PRODUCT, PERFORMANCE, You need to develop skills in using the concepts of random variables
AND PURPOSE and probability distributions to solve real life-related problems
STANDARDS Your application of the concepts of random variables and probability
distributions must be valid and can be applied to other real-life
situations.

Analyze and accomplish the experiment below.

a. Toss five 5-peso coins 20 times. Record the outcome of each toss on the table similar to the
one below.
OUTCOMES
HHTH =4 HHHTT =3 TTTHH =2 HHHHT = 4 TTTHH = 2
HHTTT =2 TTTHH =2 HHHTT =3 THHHH = 4 HHTHT = 3
THHTH =3 HHHHT =4 HTTTT =1 TTHTH = 2 HHHTT = 3
TTTTH =1 TTHHH =3 TTTHT = 1 THTHH = 3 HHHHT = 4

b. Create a probability distribution showing the number of “heads” obtained. Let 𝑋 represent
the values of random variable (the number of heads obtained.) Add or delete rows of
necessary.
𝑋 𝑃(𝑋)
1 3/20

2 1/4
3 7/20

4 1/4

c. Determine the mean of the probability distribution. Present the table and solutions
appropriately.
d. Determine the variance and standard deviation. Present the table and solutions
appropriately.

Note:
 Place all data tables, solutions and answers on the above experiment on clean sheets of
long bond paper. Present accordingly in hand written or computerized means. Highlight
relevant details. Use of appropriate designs and borders may be done.
 Submit an organized documentation while accomplishing PT 1 (7-10 actions photos).
Organize the captured photos on long bond paper. Use labels or captions accordingly.
