Discovery Quilt Guild Meeting Minutes
January 25, 2021 Submitted by Secretary, Connie Hartman
The meeting was called to order by President E.J. Adams. There were 21 members present on our
ZOOM meeting.
The minutes for November were approved as printed. The December minutes were approved as
amended. The Treasurer’s Report was approved as printed in the Newsletter.
Cares and Concerns: It was suggested that Joyce Rivers might appreciate cards from
members of the guild, she is experiencing some health concerns.
Thank you to Teresa Howard for presenting the program on preparing you quilt for long-arm work.
The instructions may be found in the newsletter. We plan to have a retreat scheduled for the
1st Monday of the month. This will be on a ZOOM format.
New Business: The International Quilt Museum in Paducah, KY is working on a project to raise
money for special displays at the museum. This will be a pair of Potholders accompanied by a cas-
serole recipe. These will be sold at the museum gift shop. Discovery Quilters will be taking part in
this project. Specific details will be in the newsletter for the potholders. We will need to have our
contribution of potholders and recipe turned into the church by July 31, 2021.
Old Business: Please send your dues to Becky Davison, PO Box 389, Shell Knob, MO 65747.
Only 25 members have turned in their money. Dues are $20 annually.
Pillows for Haven of the Ozarks: They would love to have pillows for older dogs, smaller dogs,
and cats. They can vary in size. They could be as simple as a pillowcase stuffed with fabric
scraps.
UFO project, from Karen Malnar. The new cycle will begin April 1. This can be a UFO or steps
to a new project. It has been fun for those participants, and they have gotten a lot
completed.
Reminder: We have extended Photo Bucket for one more year. If there are pictures that you want
to keep in your personal file, download them, as we may not use Photo Bucket after this year.
Committees:
Baby Quilts: Michelle Chauncey has been investigating the need for baby quilts within our own
geographical area. The Domestic Violence Shelter will be getting ten quilts. When they get down
to five available, they will notify Michelle. The Barry County New Mother’s
Program meets quarterly.
We will have 15 quilts for them by Mid-March. The Care Closet at the Shell Knob Methodist
Church will keep a few on hand as needed. We will still donate to the Infants in Need
program while serving our own community needs. There are some baby quilt kits available at the
church.
Quilt Show: The information for the Quilt Show was in the December newsletter. Clara
Cartwright reported that the date for the Quilt Show is September 25, 2021.
Comfort Quilts: Carolyn Coonrod reports that we have 9 complete quilts. One was recently
presented to Kathleen Stephens, she will give it to her niece. The pattern for the quilt is “Rosebud”
and her nickname for her niece is ‘Rosebud’. A nice little serendipity.
Education: Karen Malnar reported that there are open dates for May, June, and August. The call is
out for any program that our own members could present. Contact Karen if you could serve in this
manner.
Quilts of Valor: There is a kit available if you are interested contact Sharon Brown.
Program: Teresa Howard gave a recap of her morning session on preparing your quilt for long
arm work.
The meeting was adjourned.
Secretary, Connie Hartman

Zoom Etiquette - Did you know? You may listen in on your phone - See
instructions above
The use of programs like Zoom have become very popular with the COVID-19 situation we find
ourselves facing.
While there are many pluses, nothing is perfect and there are some negatives associated with any
electronic media. Aside from limitations imposed by internet and various hardware and software
issues, there are some other problems that aren’t necessarily associated with an “in person” meeting.
The biggest are: 1. Unnecessary chatter, 2. Extraneous noise, and 3. More than one person trying to
talk at a time. Zoom provides the meeting controller some tools such as “Muting” someone, but
common courtesy is the best method of control.
Here are some suggestions to make our Zoom meetings more pleasant and productive.
-Turn off any noises such as ceiling fans, blowers, music, animal, cell phones, etc.
-If you wish to speak, or have a question, hold your hand in front of you in such a manner that it is
obvious on the screen to others; whoever is in charge will call on you. Or use the chat feature to ask a
question.
-Be prompt logging in so all are ready at the appointed time.
Looking forward to zooming with you on the 22nd.

More kits have been added to the baby closet at the church, so that we will be ready
for the May guild baby sew day. Feel free to pick one up, if you need a project
during these cold days. We check the closet on a regular basis, for any completed
quilts or tops that need to be quilted. We appreciate all the efforts of the guild
members, in helping us achieve our goals, whether it be to stitch the kits together or
providing longarm services. It is GREATLY appreciated!

Want to Learn:
We had a wonderful Sew-in this month - virtually through Zoom. We shared projects we were
making for the Quilt Show Boutique. During the sharing time, one of our members shared this
resource she uses to learn new techniques and to improve her piecing and quilting skills. This
is a subscription-based learning environment.
