ACTIVITY 5: CULTURAL APPROPRIATION

1. What is your ethnicity? (e.g. Ilocano, Kapampangan, Tagalog; for

immigrants, e.g. Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Indian etc.)
- My ethnicity is Marikeno, and I'm originally from Marikina City.

2. Do you think that wearing a cultural symbol is acceptable as long as you

know the cultural significance of it? Why or why not?
- Yes, because this is to recognize our cultural background when
we look at symbolism in a different cultural background. This
helps people to identify and understand our cultural identity
because of the shared understanding of the different symbols
which we have managed to learn during the socialization process,
this same process by which people learn the values, practices,
expectations and beliefs of their societies.
3. Have you ever worn something from a culture other than your own?
What is it?
- Yes, I used to wear it two times when I was in elementary school for the
United nation month. I wore the cultural clothes of the Dominican
Republic and South Korea.

4. Do you discriminate someone who changes his/her religion when

influenced by other ethnicity? (e.g. Christian to Muslim vise versa).
Explain why or why not?
- No, because I believe that people provide different perceptions or that
we are free to choose what we'd like to believe, particularly in religion.
Since all religions, I respect them in the same way as we respect our
own religion, because the true meaning of all religions is the same. In
addition, I believe that this is the only way for us to preserve balance
with one another.

5. Do you discriminate someone who participates in dances or other

activities originated from from other culture? Explain.
- No, because it is a way to promote and preserve culture in another
country. As well as we will learn and enjoy the moment of that
sometimes.

6. Do you discriminate someone who gets a tattoo which symbolizes other

culture? Explain.
- No, because I believe there's a deeper message behind that cultural
tattoo, even not about their culture. Sometimes it symbolizes important
things for people who have a cultural tattoo.

7. Do you discriminate someone who gets a hairstyle influenced by other

culture? Explain.
- No, in our life, we have our very own choice about what we want to do
to oneself. Sometimes we do a hair color that influence if the other
culture because we admire them. As well as this is not forbidden to
admire some other culture at all.
