The contrast between role of woman before and nowadays

The struggle of women to have an equal role in society has been developing to this day; and although
there are some things that still must change, if we look at all that we have achieved, we will realize how
far we have come. Things as normal as going to vote or studying were impossible for women in the past.
The role of woman has changed a lot throughout history, especially in the fields of politic, education and
independence.
In the past, women did not have the right to participate in politics. For example, in our country, as quoted
by Garcia (2005), the right to vote for woman was approved by the government in 1929, while men had
this right since 1830. Additionally, women didn’t have the opportunity to be part of any level of political
life; much less be leaders. Currently women not only have the right to be part of the political life of their
countries, but some of them are also leaders. According to Time (2021), some of the most important
female leaders in the world are: Angela Merkel, chancellor of Germany; Helle Thorning, Prime Minister
of Denmark; Yingluck Shinawatra, Prime Minister of Thailand; Dilma Rousseff, President of Brazil; Julia
Gillard, Prime Minister of Australia; among others
Likewise, women didn’t have access to education; only upper- class women had this possibility.
Although, as Newham college (n.d) mention, the point of their education was to make them attractive
marriage material for men. Their lessons were on basics of reading, writing, domestic skills, social graces,
music, and etiquette. On the other hand, today women have the same opportunities to access education as
men, even in any field they want. As a result of this, women became empowered. An example of that is
the politician and lawyer Christine Legarde. Legarde is the president of the European central bank, and
among her degrees we have Master in Commercial Law, DESS in Commercial and Labour Law, Master
with major in Economics and Finance, and Master in American Literature (European central bank, 2019).
Thanks to these advances, women were able to become independent. Before, woman depended on the
male members of her families. Srivastava (2019) mention that women were like possession of men.
Formals jobs were form them, while woman had to handle of the house-chores. Over the years, women
have broken that barrier. According to Scaglione (2014), women are also providing in their homes, they
are considered for decision-making, and they are not the only ones responsible for the home; this
responsibility is shared with the couple.
Definitively, think that in the past the simple fact of being a woman made you lose credibility, authority
and dignity is something complicated to process in our time. Thanks to the efforts of many women who
raised their voices and claimed their rights, today we can enjoy greater equality that has allowed us to
grow in the social, intellectual, and economic sense around the world.
