Introduction to E-commerce

WHY DO YOU THINK IT IS IMPORTANT
TO STUDY
E-commerce and Internet Marketing?
Information and Communications
Technology (ICT)

• Refers to all the technology used to handle

telecommunications, broadcast media, intelligent building
management systems, audiovisual processing and
transmission systems, and network-based control and
monitoring functions.
• Although ICT is often considered an extended synonym for
information technology (IT), its scope is more broad.
Digital Economy

• The “digital economy” is a term for all of those economic

processes, transactions, interactions and activities that are based
on digital technologies.
• The digital economy is different from the internet economy in
that the internet economy is based on internet connectivity,
whereas the digital economy is more broadly based on any of the
many digital tools used in today's economic world.

Basic Functions of Information
Communication Technology

1. Capture Function
2. Processing Function
3. Generation Function
4. Storage Function
5. Retrieval Function
6. Transmission Function
1. Capture Function

• Takes the form of a task that is done by way of using devices like
scanners and cameras, thus allowing storage of vital data and
information for future use.
2. Processing Function

• ICT made computers extremely popular as it is now. It is the most

common activity usually associated with computers and
voluminous numeric data.
• Expedient processing of data is usually the purpose for which
people and business organizations purchase computers. It entails
converting, analyzing, and synthesizing all forms of data or
information.
• Data Processing focuses on taking data (raw numbers, symbols,
and letters) and transforming them into information that is
eventually used as basis or reference for decision-making.
Information Processing may come in variety
of ways namely:

a) Word Processing – involves the creation of text-based

documents, including reports, newsletters, and correspondence.
b) Image Processing – includes converting visual information (e.g.,
graphics, drawing and photos) into a format that can be
managed within a computer system or transmitted between
people and other computers. Example is scanning an image that
can be use for further process.
c) Voice Processing – aspect involves transformation and
transmission of spoken information. (Editing spoken words and
use it on a rap or a song).
3. Generation Function

• Refers to the organization of data and information to a useful

form, whether as numbers, text, sound, or visual image.
Sometimes, data or information is regenerated (reformed) in its
original form.

Example:
➢ Recorded Musical notes are “played” as sounds with rhythm and
pauses eventually generating a new kind of sound or music.
4. Storage and Retrieval Function

• Storage Function – enables computer to keep data and

information for later use. Stored data are placed on a storage
medium. Some of these are:
a. Magnetic Disk
b. Compact Disk (CD)
c. Diskettes
d. USB Storage Devices
e. SD/Micro SD
4. Storage and Retrieval Function

• Retrieval Function – enables locating and copying stored data or

information for further processing or for transmission to another
user.
• To be able to access or retrieve data or information earlier stored,
the user must remember the file or reference name and keep
track of the medium where the data or information is stored and
make it available to the computer for processing.
5. Transmission Function

• A function in ICT that allows sending data and information from one
location to another.

There are two (2) common forms of Information Transmission:

1. Electronic Mail (e-mail) – is typified by the acceptance, and
transmission of texts and images between users of computer
system.
2. Voice Messaging (Voice Mail) – a function of ICT that allows callers
to leave spoken message entered though their telephone receiver
where it plays when the person who will receive your message gets
back in the office.
BENEFITS OF ICT

1. Speed
2. Consistency
3. Precision (exactness or accurate)
4. Reliability
Types of Information

1. Data – form of information refer to raw facts, figures and

details.
2. Text – form of written which may be typewritten, printed, or
hand written.
3. Image – form of information in visual form. Come in the form of
graphs, charts, line drawings or photographs in traditional or
digital format.
4. Sound – refers to spoken information that is conveyed by way of
sound.
