Shimonakh Ilarion
Domrachev Ivan Ivanovich

Shimonakh Ilarion was born around 1845 in the Vyatka province. He spent more than twenty years
on Mount Athos in the Russian Panteleimon Monastery, and then, together with his elder father,
Disiderius, he moved from Athos to the Caucasus.

After the death of Disiderius, Hilarion retired deep into the mountains and lived there for another
quarter of a century, bypassing the entire Caucasus from the Caspian to the Black Seas. With him he
had only a bag of bread crumbs, a kettle and a hatchet for chopping wood. In 1899, between Anapa
and Novorossiysk, in the place "Dark Buki" in a beech forest, Elder Hilarion founded the Intercession
Community, which was transformed into a monastery in 1904.

Father Hilarion, together with his student Vladimir Kirilyuk, wrote the book "On the Caucasus
Mountains" and at the end of his life gave the manuscripts of his works to Father Benedict, also
Afonts. He decided to publish them and with this proposal came to Optina Pustyn. The publication
was blessed by the elder Varsanofiy, the book was published and met with the warmest reviews both
among the Athos monasticism and among the spiritually enlightened people of Russia. For five
years, the book went through three editions, and the right to the last edition was acquired from the
author of the Kiev-Pechersk Lavra and published in an unprecedented circulation for that time - 10
thousand copies.
The book expounds the patristic Orthodox teaching about the Jesus prayer and intelligent ascent,
it is emphasized that
English
andRussian outside the Name of Jesus salvation is impossible for either a monk or a
layman. The author illustrates this with the words of St. John of Kronstadt: "The name of God is God
Himself." In the future, this phrase becomes the basis of naming. After the beginning of the
persecution of name-glory, Schema monk Hilarion was accused of spreading "heretical teaching", but
he himself denied the accusations of heresy.

Shimonakh Hilarion finished his earthly journey on June 14, 1916 and was buried under the chapel
of the monastery in the Dark Buki tract. Until 1929, the sisters, headed by the abbess, lived there
under strict rules, but then the community was dispersed by the order of the Soviet government.
