Phonics Fact
Gr is a blend. Blends are
two consonants whose
sounds are blended
together when you say
them. You can hear the
gr blend at the beginning
of Grady, groundhog,
and great. What other
gr words can you find
in this story? Look at the
pictures, too!

Grady was a little groundhog. He lived with his

Phonics Tales: A Groundhog Named Grady (gr) © Scholastic Teaching Resources

There’s grow and group and grapes and grandpa.

There’s grouch and gray and more words still—

Like grouch and greet and gross and grill.

G-r, g-r, give a great cheer,

For the grandest sound you ever will hear!

Make a list of
other gr words.
Then use them
gr in your cheer.
