Experiment No. 01
Single Phase Diode Rectifier with Inductive Loads
Pre Lab Reading
Chapter 3 of Power Electronics: Circuits, Devices and Applications, by M. H. Rashid (4e).

Objectives
 Analyze the working and performance of a single phase rectifier on Multisim.
 Observe the effect of inductive load on working of a rectifier.
 Observe the effect of freewheeling diode on working of a rectifier.

Equipment (for hardware)

  AC supply
 Breadboard
 Diodes
  Resistors
 Inductor coil
 Oscilloscope
  Multi-meter
 LCR meter
 Connecting wires

Theory
When a single rectifier diode unit is placed in series with the load across an ac supply, it converts
alternating voltage into uni-directional pulsating voltage, using one half cycle of the applied voltage, the
other half cycle being suppressed because it conducts only in one direction. This is called half-wave
rectification.

Part 1 - Half Wave Rectifier with Resistive Load

Implement the circuit of half wave rectifier as shown in Figure 1.1 and record the observations as
described. Select an appropriate value of the resistor. Please read the data sheet of the diode for current
and voltage ratings.

Performance Parameters (use oscilloscope waveform)

Peak output voltage = Vm =

Average value of output voltage = Vdc = 0.318 Vm =

Average value of output current = Idc = Vdc/R =
RMS value of output voltage = Vrms = 0.5 Vm =
RMS value of output current = Irms = Vrms/R =

Observations:
Using the waveforms displayed on oscilloscope draw the following with
proper scaling of both axes (Draw at least two cycles).

Part 2 - Half Wave Rectifier with Inductive Load

Arrange the circuit as shown in Figure 1.2 here inductive load is added to the circuit. Select
appropriate value of the inductance. The transformer winding can also be used as an
inductor. While using transformer as an inductor please ensure that its other winding in not
connected to the supply. Use LCR meter to measure the inductance of the winding. Use
different values of the inductor to observe the effect of inductance on output voltage
waveform

Part 3 - Effect of freewheeling diode

Arrange the circuit as shown in Figure 1.3. A free-wheeling diode Dm is added to the
circuit to provide path for the dissipation of energy stored in the inductor.
