Experiment 5: Performance of inverting operational amplifier

Date:
Objective:
1) To construct an inverting operational amplifier circuit
2) To show the input and output waveform of an inverting operational amplifier circuit.

Basic Theory:

In an inverting amplifier circuit, the operational amplifier inverting input receives feedback
from the output of the amplifier. Assuming the op-amp is ideal and applying the concept of
virtual short at the input terminals of op-amp, the voltage at the inverting terminal is equal to
non-inverting terminal. The non-inverting input of the operational amplifier is connected to
ground. As the gain of the op amp itself is very high and the output from the amplifier is a
matter of only a few volts, this means that the difference between the two input terminals is
exceedingly small and can be ignored. As the non-inverting input of the operational amplifier
is held at ground potential this means that the inverting input must be virtually at earth
potential.

Applying KCL at inverting node we can calculate voltage gain,

Voltage gain (A)= Vout/ Vin = – Rf/Rin

Procedure:
1) Construct the circuit as shown in the experimental circuit.
2) Set the value for power supply is (V CC =15 V andV EE=15 V )
3) Set the value for function generator is 200 Hz and the input signal is sinusoidal.
4) Observe the input and output signal from the oscilloscope.
5) Measure the amplitude (input and output voltage) and sketch the signal.
6) Measure the gain and compare the output voltage from the theory and experiment.
