COURSE NAME INTRODUCTION TO CHEMICAL ENGINEERING PLANT DESIGN

Assessment : Group Project – Energy Balance Calculation

CLO : 2
MQF LOD : 9
Domain : A3
Assessment marks : 10%
Task : 1. Calculate energy balance on the chemical process.

Learning outcome

1. Energy balance calculation of the process involved.

Assessment

Students are required to submit a detail report showing the calculation used to determine the energy
balance of each process stream.

1. Introduction & PFD – briefly explain the process and purpose of this operation unit. Ensure the
plant PFD is updated accordingly. (reboiler line, condenser line, reflux drum, etc.)

2. Energy balance calculation – proceed calculation to determine the energy requirement for all
major operation units (reactor, distillation column, mixer, etc). Use appropriate assumptions to
proceed with the calculation. Update the previous material balance sheet to show the figures (A3
paper).
