Complex Engineering Problem for Measurement and

Instrumentation (EE314)
Introduction
Many persons with active SARS-CoV-2 infection experience mild or no symptoms,
presenting barriers to COVID-19 prevention. Regular temperature screening is
nonetheless used in some settings, including university campuses, to reduce transmission
potential. We evaluated the potential impact of this strategy using a prospective
university-affiliated cohort. One common strategy to prevent transmission has been
temperature checks, which have increased in popularity as a non-invasive measure to
rapidly screen individuals for elevated body temperature (i.e., fever). Thus, require
temperature monitoring system remotely sense the body temperature, and open the
entrance door only for healthy individual in the premises of Faculty of Electrical
Engineering in order the avoid the potential spread of Covid 19.
Project Description:
The aim of this course project is to develop an instrument that non-invasively measured
the body temperature and developed the control logic for operating the solenoid door lock
only for healthy individual. Students can randomly select the noninvasive temperature
sensor and solenoid door lock. Perform sensor characterization and based on the sensor
characterization and the requirement for solenoid door operating condition, design the
signal conditioning circuits for temperature display and control logic unit of solenoid door
lock.

Objectives:
After successful completion of the given tasks, students are expected to
a) Design a noninvasive Temperature Monitoring System that sense the body
temperature for variable height that ranges in between 5ft_6ft (Note: Design of
and analysis of signal conditioning circuit is a part of project assessment) with
allowable range of ±3% mean square error (MSE) between measured value of the
and commercially available temperature monitoring system. (For design steps see
Appendix A) PLO-3
b) Developed a control logic that only allow the healthier person whose body
temperature less than 99 degree C to enter in the premises of Faculty of Electrical
Engineering. PLO-3
c) Statistically analyze the developed temperature monitoring system with the
standard temperature monitoring available in the market. PLO-2
d) Estimate the cost of customize temperature monitoring system solution with
existing available solution in the market. PLO-11
e) The design of temperature-controlled entrance door system will be completed on
01/Dec/2021 and follow the timeline (See Appendix-A) PLO-11
f) Use the acquired skills of English for academic purpose for formulating
a well-structured technical report (See Appendix-C)– PLO-10

The assessment will be based on the rubrics listed in the table given below.
