Objectives:
Create a circuit model for half wave rectifier with inductive load and a freewheeling
diode.
Study the behavior of inductive load with freewheeling diode
Study the behavior of inductive load without freewheeling diode
Apparatus:
Matlab
Simulink software
Theory:
A freewheeling diode is basically a diode connected across the inductive load terminals to prevent
the development of high voltage across the switch. When the inductive circuit is switched off, this
diode gives a short circuit path for the flow of inductor decay current and hence dissipation of stored
energy in the inductor.
The main purpose of freewheeling is to free wheel the stored energy in inductor by providing
a short circuit path. This is necessary else a sudden decay in circuit current will give rise to high
voltage across the switch contacts and diode.
Circuit Diagram:
Procedure:
First make the circuit without the FWD
Run the entire circuit simulation
Observe the graphs for the output current and voltages
Change the inductance value and observe the graphs again
Repeat the previous steps for a number of readings
The make the circuit with the FWD
Run the entire circuit simulation

Conclusion:
As we can see by comparing the results of our two parameters, adding a freewheeling diode
smoothens the graphs from both the sides of output current and voltage and makes the output better
