An Amazing City
Petra in Jordan is one of the most famous archaeological sites in the world. It is
incredible, however, that anyone settled here at all. The area is arid desert and all
you can see is rock. The reason why people were able to settle here is the water
system. The area occasionally experiences flooding after bad storms. In the 3rd
er
century BC, the Nabataean tribe occupied the area and built channels and reservoirs
to control and store the water. Buildings were carved from the rock and a city took
p
shape. By the 1st century AD, there was enough stored floodwater here to support
Pa
30,000 inhabitants, many of whom had lush gardens. At this time, it came under the
rule of the Roman Empire.
Because of its geographical location and its water supply, Petra became a popular
e
stopping point for merchants on trade routes between Arabia, Egypt and Syria-
pl
Phoenicia. They traded in spices, silk and other luxury items. This continued for
centuries, until 383 AD, when an earthquake destroyed many buildings. Gradually the
m
inhabitants started to leave. At around the same time, traders started travelling by
sea, so Petra stopped being such a significant visiting point. In 663, the last Roman
inhabitants abandoned the city. Sa
The most beautiful characteristic of Petra is that it is half-carved, half-built into the
pink rock, with around 800 different buildings, including churches, tombs and
ns
Since then, tourism has declined and the priceless monuments are at risk from the
effects of the weather. An even bigger danger, however, is thieves and vandals.
at
Traditional Bedouin people occupied cave dwellings near Petra for centuries.
in
However, this was forbidden by the government in 1985, when alternative housing
was provided outside the site. Many visitors have been astounded by the connection
am
of local people to their traditional ways of life. Even those with a comfortable bed,
hot shower and internet connection at home sometimes spend their time in the
caves, occassionally sleeping illegally at the sacred sites.

Read the following passage and answer all the questions. Awarded
Pioneering Flight
In 1947, flying from Australia to England took four days and required nine stops. Seventy
years later, the 2017 route had become much simpler and more direct. However, it still
required at least one refuelling stop, meaning the journey took around 20 hours. In
March the following year, however, airline passengers experienced history. Qantas
er
flight QF9 took off from Perth, Western Australia in the evening and landed in London
17 hours later, without stopping.
p
The flight is the first direct passenger service between the two continents, covering a
Pa
distance of 9,009-miles. This is 24% further than Qantas Airline’s previous longest route
of 7,275 miles, between London and Jakarta. Currently, the world's longest direct flight
is 9,025 miles from Qatar to New Zealand, operated by Qatar Airways. Qantas is already
planning non-stop flights from Eastern Australia to Europe, which it intends to add to
e
its global schedules within five years.
pl
Aviation consultant John Strickland said, ‘This Perth-London route is a test of how
m
successful long-haul flying can be. We’ll see if the investment is worthwhile.’ Rico
Merkert, from Sydney’s business school, is already a believer, ‘These travellers want to
Sa
fly fast and comfortably, and they’re prepared to pay the premium.’ Lisa Norman, the
captain, said, ‘It’s an amazing development and very exciting.’ The Boeing 787-9
Dreamliners on the Perth-London route have several advantages over other models,
including lower noise levels, improved air quality and larger windows. They offer 42
ns
business class flat-bed seats, 28 premium economy seats and 166 economy seats,
slightly fewer than non-direct flights.
io
However, comparing flight times and prices shows the difficulties Qantas faces. Return
at
economy flights start at £1,095. Going via Singapore or Abu Dhabi takes three hours
longer but costs start from only £580. The added advantage of stopping on route is the
in
chance to escape the cramped economy seating. Qantas hope that at least their inflight
meals, voted as among the best in the world, will please any passengers unhappy with
am
other aspects of the flight. For many on the direct flight, however, taking off at dusk
and landing before dawn, means experiencing the world’s longest flight without
daylight, which might not be very appealing. The success of this route will lie in
customer satisfaction.

The Barkley Marathons is the world’s craziest, most secretive race. It is a demanding
run through unmarked, rough Tennessee mountains. A marathon of the same distance
in the Alps has a time limit of 46 hours. Barkley competitors have 60 hours to finish
the course. Temperatures can range from freezing to blistering hot on the same day,
er
and there is a height gain of more than 18,000 metres — the equivalent of climbing
Mount Everest twice from sea level. Runners must rely on using a map, as any kind of
p
GPS device or mobile phone is forbidden.
Pa
Competitors complete five circuits of a course with little or no sleep. Each 20-mile
circuit alternates in direction, two taking place in the dark. This race has neither a
financial reward, nor a medal to take home. The only prize is that after 100 miles
e
they have the satisfaction of coming to the end. Gary Cantrell, the race’s creator,
admits, ‘Other races are set up for you to succeed. The Barkley wants you to fail.’
pl
While marathon running has increased in popularity, with many races attracting
m
corporate sponsors and entry fees of $1,000 or more, the Barkley costs just $1.60 to
enter and has a limit of 40 runners a year.
Sa
There are other obstacles for competitors: no website, no published race date or
entrance instructions. Runners must complete an entry form with bizarre questions
like, ‘What’s the most important vegetable?’ Successful applicants must bring
ns
Cantrell a gift: first-timers bring a vehicle license plate and in subsequent years they
bring an item of clothing, such as a shirt. For veterans, the gift is a packet of
cigarettes.
io
at
With no race marshals along the route, Cantrell hides books at various checkpoints to
confirm that no one cheats. Runners must rip out the page that matches their race
number. If the page is lost, the runner is disqualified. Since the race started in 1986,
in
only 15 competitors, all of them male, have completed the full race in the time. In
am
2015, nobody finished, in 2016, only one person finished. Usually two-thirds of
runners give up on the first circuit and Cantrell announces their failure by blowing a
horn.

Section R1 (13 marks) Marks
Read the following passage and answer all the questions. Awarded
A study testing new underwater cameras has given scientists the best view yet of the
lives of wild dusky dolphins. A research team managed to attach small, high-tech
cameras to a full range of dolphins, from young ones to adults. They hoped that filming
them would provide greater understanding of the dolphins and their ecosystem, and
er
help develop conservation efforts. However, the cameras also captured other activities
which are rarely seen, such as mothers looking after their babies and other dolphins
p
rubbing their flippers together as if they were shaking hands.
Pa
The Australian team initially considered running the research project off South
America, but decided instead to go somewhere with calmer waters. Just off the coast
of New Zealand, the scientists went out with their equipment and tempted the dolphins
with food. The method used to attach the cameras wasn’t very scientific. As the
e
dolphins swam by the boat, the team quickly and harmlessly fixed them on by means
pl
of a long pole, on which there were cameras with suction cups. These stuck to the
animal’s skin. Although it was a simple method, it wasn’t an easy one, as the dolphins
m
are small and very fast, so the researchers had to aim accurately.
From the surface, researchers can see only 10% of what is going on in a dolphin’s life.
Sa
The new waterproof cameras send the underwater film to the crew, who, in total,
gathered over 500 hours of film. The cameras are designed to fall off when the battery
becomes exhausted, which is after about six hours. They are very tough, and even
ns
dolphins bumping into rocks or coral does not dislodge or damage them. This makes the
cameras nearly twice as effective as older designs, which only had three hours of
memory.
io
The team are now preparing to attach cameras to as many dolphins as possible in water
at
with high levels of human disturbance. They are concerned that shipping and coastal
development are affecting the animals’ ability to feed and raise young. They are
in
confident that the new cameras will reveal how effectively a variety of dolphin species
deal with their challenges. They eventually want to move on to researching sharks and
am
are also planning an extensive whale research project some time in the future.

Read the following passage and answer all the questions. Awarded
Charles and Lois O’Brien, who are both over eighty years old, have a collection which
is quite extraordinary. Filling two rooms in their home in Arizona, there are over a
million insects in glass cases. Gathered over six decades, the insects originate from
every continent and corner of the world, and altogether are worth around $10 million.
er
The couple met at university and realised their mutual fascination for bugs. However,
they had both had a passion for insects since childhood. ‘I loved plant hoppers as a
p
child,’ says Lois. ‘They’re bizarre and colourful, but they also have amazing
Pa
camouflage ability, which is what I have developed my particular interest in. I’ve
written two books on it.’ Searching for insects has led Charles and Lois to some
amazing adventures. They went to frozen islands off Antarctica fruitlessly searching
for rare weevils. Disappointed, they then spent months in New Zealand, where they
e
finally managed to find them. While insect hunting in Nicaragua, they made an
pl
unexpected discovery of a different kind: they met a man who had only ever heard
parrots speak English, but never human beings.
m
Once, in Venezuela, Charles was in a pond collecting water insects, when several men
Sa
with guns jumped out of the bushes. Lois thought that these men owned the land, or
worse, that they were criminals or kidnappers. They turned out to be the police,
thinking that the couple wanted to steal caimans, the small crocodiles of the
Americas. Charles then charged out of the pond, bug-catching net in hand, and
ns
This week, the couple declared that they would donate the collection, which includes
one million weevils and 250,000 plant hoppers, to Arizona State University. Professor
at
Nico Franz stated that it would double the number of insects at the university to two
and a half million, making it the second largest in the world after New York University's
in
collection of three million. Franz called it a ‘goldmine’ for researchers and said that
some of the insects were ‘new to science’ and would help them piece together a large
am
part of the insect family tree and work out the relationships between them.

Read the following passage and answer all the questions. Awarded
Even though the phrase ‘Reality TV’ is relatively recent, the history of TV using ordinary
people as its stars goes back right to the beginning of TV itself in the 1940s. The
expression, however, was not used until the late 1990s. There are three main categories
of reality TV: humorous shows, where people are filmed in funny situations; contests,
such as the X Factor; and films of people’s lives as they go about living them, such as
er
The Wedding. The earliest versions were the funny ones, such as Candid Camera, which
was first televised in 1948, having begun as Candid Microphone, a talking show on radio
p
in 1947. In fact, Candid Camera is seen as the prototype for much modern reality TV.
Pa
Nowadays, reality TV is so addictive that some fans watch for hours every day trying to
keep up with the latest events on their favourite shows.
Ginny Wanstone is one such fan. She is a student but manages an average of 15 hours a
e
week of daytime TV from Monday to Friday, in between attending just 12 hours of
pl
compulsory lectures. Then, instead of going out in the evenings with friends, she stays
at home and watches another 17 hours a week, leaving the weekends as the only times
m
she can catch up with university work. ‘It takes a lot of my time, but I enjoy seeing
what’s happening in the everyday lives of other people I’ll never actually meet in my
Sa
life,’ explains the 19-year-old who is in the second year of a three-year sociology degree
at university. Ginny also thinks that watching reality TV is useful research for her
degree. She says, ‘You have to remember that some people on the shows are
exaggerating and not really presenting their own lives. However, I still believe that
ns
most people are being genuine and it is helpful to examine their relationships’.
io
Not everyone is as satisfied as Ginny with reality TV. One of Ginny’s lecturers,
sociologist James Newton, says, ‘Experts in my field agree that some of what we see
at
on these shows is shocking. People can be shamed and treated badly. We urgently need
to encourage investment in more traditional types of programming’.

Read the following passage and answer all the questions. Awarded
The snow leopard is an endangered species, with only 7,000 left in the wild. Some live
in the Tost Mountains in Mongolia, where the local community also keeps their animals.
Despite only around 15 snow leopards living here, snow leopard attacks on livestock
used to be relatively frequent. This was because the leopards occupied the slopes with
r
the best grass, bringing them into direct contact with livestock, including goats, camels
pe
and cattle. The locals often killed snow leopards to protect their animals, and, in the
1990s, a conservationist project was set up to try to solve the conflict, benefitting both
Pa
locals and snow leopards.
A Mongolian teacher, Bayara Agvaantseren, joined this project in 1997. She had grown
up nearby and learned about the mountain community and their livestock since she was
e
a child. She understood their perspective because she knew how hard their lifestyle
pl
could be, and considered many of them her friends. She had also been enthusiastic
about protecting the snow leopard for some time, as she had been working for the Snow
m
Leopard’s Trust since the early 1990s.
In an effort to persuade locals not to kill snow leopards, the project team provided
Sa
them with a kind of insurance. This guaranteed that any animal killed by a leopard
would be replaced. In addition, Bayara herself showed locals how to make handicrafts
out of their animals’ wool to make money from tourists, while others in the team
ns
improved the fencing, radically reducing the number of leopard attacks. From the
beginning, the locals were pleased with these developments and promised not to react
io
In 2009, Bayara realised that coal mining in the Tost Mountains was threatening the
leopards as their habitat was being lost. She encouraged the locals to get involved in
in
saving this amazing animal, and they set up a political campaign which lasted ten years.
For a long time it seemed to be having no effect, but eventually the pressure forced
am
the government to slow mining work. It has now completely ceased, meaning the snow
leopards’ territory is safe. Bayara recently received an award for her work protecting

Last Saturday, in a crowded auction room, the Hong Kong branch of Christie’s held
its 30th-anniversary auction. The star of the auction was a 30cm Hermès Birkin
‘Himalayan’ crocodile-leather handbag, with white-gold detailing and 245 high-
quality diamonds.
er
The hopeful buyers, mostly from China, with a few collectors from Taiwan and
Japan, watched with excitement as prices for the Birkin rose past the pre-sale
p
estimate of $190,000 to $260,000. In four minutes, the bag had been purchased by
Pa
an unnamed private collector, for $300,000, just over the retail price of $285,000,
and a new world record for handbags was set. The fact that a handbag could sell
for well over double the price of an ancient hanging scroll that once belonged to a
Chinese Empress, also sold at the auction, shows how popular the Birkin now is.
e
According to Matthew Rubinger, Christie’s director of handbags, the popularity of
pl
the ‘Himalayan’ Birkin is because of its colour, which is achieved by removing the
leather’s natural colour. This produces a tone that graduates from grey to white,
m
inspired by the snowy mountains which the bag takes its name from. As Hermès
produces only one or two of these bags annually, they are valued for being rare,
with a six-year waiting list to purchase one. Sa
The Birkin bag was originally created for actress and singer Jane Birkin in 1985,
after she sat next to the chief executive of Hermès on a flight and complained she
ns
couldn’t find the perfect in-flight bag. The resulting bag, which Jane used for
several years, was large and black with several pockets for travel items. They are
now sold in a range of sizes and colours.
io
It may seem odd that handbags are now seen as investments, but for Birkin
at
collector Sookie Yang, a Hong Kong-based banker, who started collecting the bags
in 1993, ‘Birkins are a sure way of making a good profit over time. People consider
in
them to be a fashion accessory but I would never actually use one.’ She has over 50
and, as a Birkin V.I.P. customer, has made her purchases directly from the
am
boutiques but also at auction. The trend in their value has continued to rise over
the past 30 years, performing even better than gold. In fact, prices have increased
by 500 percent in that time and experts believe that they will double in the next
10 years.

In Finland, there has been a huge financial investment in Ioncell, which is much more
environmentally-friendly than cotton production but can be costly. The process involves
Pa
machines cutting down birch trees. The wood is shredded into small pieces and turned
into liquid in special tanks. Some activists have expressed concern that this means
cutting down large areas of trees. However, they admit that, as birch is a fast-growing
e
tree, it is favourable compared to the process of making jeans from cotton, which
requires 7,000 litres of water for every pair.
pl
Clothes made using wood pulp might not sound comfortable, but the process is so
m
sophisticated that Ioncell clothing is very high quality. In fact, so far it has only been
used to make high-fashion clothing. The science was developed by chemists at Aalto
Sa
and Helsinki universities, who were researching how to recycle old clothing.
Researchers realised that the same chemicals could be used to make pulp into fabric.
They commissioned high-profile designers to make clothes from the material, including,
ns
shirts, coats and dresses. They want to increase public interest before the clothing
becomes available to the general public.
io
Ana Portela is one such designer. She says consumers will only be persuaded to try
sustainable fashion if it is worn by influential people. The fashion industry is responsible
at
for 10% of global emissions, or pollution, and many have stopped buying certain fashion
brands. Portela, however, wants the industry to change from the inside and for
in
sustainable clothes to become mainstream. She used to encourage people to buy fewer
clothes, but this is difficult as fashion companies produce a new range every season.
am
She now believes customers should campaign for companies to invest in sustainable
technologies like Ioncell. If they do, and research continues, you could be wearing
fashionable and sustainable Ioncell clothing by 2025.

Read the following passage and answer all the questions.
A Bat At Risk
The Cuban greater funnel-eared bat is a rare, strange-looking bat, which for many years
was thought to be extinct. In 1992, it was rediscovered by a team of researchers in a
cave called Cueva la Barca, deep in a Cuban forest, and was then listed as a protected
l
species by the Cuban government. The 750 that remain exist in this cave alone, as this
ia
is the only place where conditions are ideal for them. They are not kept in captivity as
er
this has never been successful in the past.
Scientific researchers often mark individual bats using necklaces or wing punches.
at
However, this can sometimes harm the bats or change their behaviour, so researchers
had to find a different way. Each funnel-eared bat has therefore had its nails painted
M
in different colours. This gives each bat a unique marking and allows researchers to
recognise it. In order to research the bats’ night-time activities, scientists had similar
e
concerns about attaching tracking devices, so instead they installed recording
equipment around the forest which picks up noises from the bats’ movements. This has
pl
helped determine which fruit the bats eat and how far they travel.
m
Bats, generally, are a vulnerable species because they contract illness easily. However,
researchers have found little evidence of that in this case. They believe the bats are so
Sa
endangered because they require such high humidity and high temperatures. These
conditions are only found in this cave. Unfortunately, the structure of the cave is now
fragile and the roof is in danger of falling in. The area of the nearby Guanahacabibes
ns
National Park was recently extended to include Cueva la Barca, and researchers hope
that this will bring more government aid.
io
As so little is known about these bats, nobody actually knows how to increase their
numbers. A lot more needs to be found out about their breeding biology. This is seen
at
as a priority for scientists. Since the area is not well researched, many are optimistic
that there are more caves in the forest containing these bats. There is also a plentiful
in
supply of insects in the surrounding forest to support colonies of bats. The race is on to
learn as much as possible about this rare animal and save it before it’s too late.

Ivory comes from the long teeth or tusks of several animals, most famously elephants,
and is used for jewellery and decorative objects. We know that over the past two
centuries, African elephant numbers have fallen from 26 million to fewer than
er
500,000 but elephants have been slaughtered in enormous numbers for over 2,000
years. In the 1970s, half the African elephant population disappeared.
p
In 1989, the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) banned
Pa
the international ivory trade. After this, there was a slow-down in the killing of
elephants but now it is increasing again. The price of ivory is so attractive that 100
animals are killed every day. At this rate, African Elephants will be extinct by 2030.
e
There is, however, another source of ivory, which doesn’t involve killing elephants.
pl
This is because they are already dead. The elephant in question is the Siberian
Mammoth. This creature became extinct 10,000 years ago but bodies can still be
m
found in the frozen ground of Yakutia in arctic Russia. With permanently frozen
ground, the region is like a gigantic freezer.
Sa
Yakutia is the same size as India but has a population of under a million. Jobs are
scarce as tourism and industry are undeveloped here. Many men choose to look for
ns
mammoth ivory in the vast countryside. Known as tuskers, these men travel in boats
down rivers and spend the summer miles from their families in the digging areas. In
io
winter, temperatures average minus 50° so work is impossible as most rivers are solid
ice. Between May and October, they use powerful, up-to-date water pumps designed
at
by firefighters to dig tunnels into the frozen soil. The horns of ancient Woolly
Rhinoceroses are also sometimes found. Almost as valuable as ivory, they are not
in
usually used in the same way. They are easily sold on the international market,
however, as an ingredient in certain healing remedies.
am
Obviously, digging for extinct mammoth ivory is better than killing live animals in
Africa. However, not only is it illegal, meaning that tuskers run the risk of arrest, but
Ex
scientists also complain that they are stealing an important scientific resource and
damaging the environment.

Lucid Dreams
A lucid dream is a dream during which you know you are dreaming and can influence
the dream yourself. Only around 20% of people report having regular lucid dreams,
although 50% of us will have at least one during our lifetime, according to studies.
People who report lucid dreams say it is like being partially awake, but these dreams
r
only take place in a very deep sleep. Some of the first accounts of lucid dreams were
pe
written by Mary Arnold-Forster in Studies in Dreams in 1921. However, the term itself
was first used by a Dutch psychiatrist in 1913, and there are written references to the
phenomenon which date back to the ancient Greeks.
Pa
Mary Arnold-Forster began having lucid dreams during the First World War. She dreamt
she was a spy and being chased. She was aware she was dreaming, and realised she
could choose where to run. Many of us would wake up in fear, but Arnold-Forster threw
e
herself into the exhilaration of being a ‘spy’. She would repeat a phrase to herself
pl
during the day, which she said made her more likely to have a lucid dream.
m
Arnold-Forster even found she could choose the situation in her dreams. She could do
anything, like cast magic spells. However, she noticed she had to develop certain skills
Sa
that were out of the ordinary. For example, in her favourite dream, which was to fly,
she needed nights of dedicated practice, slowly pushing herself off the ground until
eventually she could soar through the air. Today, this is the most reported subject of a
lucid dream, far above others, which include time travel and talking with animals.
ns
Much research has gone into understanding lucid dreams, although it is still not clear
how or why they occur. They can be useful for solving some sleep issues, but their
io
effectiveness is limited. Sufferers of nightmares who use techniques for lucid dreaming
at
say it can help to know they are dreaming, while people who find it hard to get to sleep
report that the techniques have no effect. Lucid dreams can also result in unpleasant
in
feelings like sleep paralysis, in which you are half-awake in bed but cannot move.

Mei Yan may have the greatest job in the world, even though it may not be the best
paid. She is a panda nanny, meaning that she looks after panda cubs. There are
several panda protection centres in China, from Bifengxia to Wolong, the largest of
r
which is in Chengdou. It is here that Mei looks after baby pandas and the centre is a
pe
great success with around 15,000 visitors daily. Recently a panda nanny job, with a
salary of $32,000, was advertised at the Shaanxi Centre. There were 100,000 people
who navigated the complicated website to complete the application form. Applicants
Pa
for the job had to be over the age of 22, with a basic knowledge of pandas.
Mei has been working as a panda nanny since 2008 and has helped raise 52 cubs. The
e
centre is home to 113 Giant Pandas so 12 nannies are employed. Mei is one of the
pl
most experienced and is currently in charge of nine cubs. She recently became known
globally after a colleague posted a video of Mei trying to clean the enclosures, with
m
the help of three mischievous panda cubs! The video went viral, with two million
views in six months.
Sa
Mei’s day is well structured, starting with bottle feeding the cubs their milk. She
doesn’t have her own breakfast until she has carried them all outside, one by one:
ns
not an easy task as a cub can weigh 15kg. Mei has been scratched and bitten but
doesn’t mind, as the close contact is her favourite part of the job. She briefly takes
io
her meal break, but is soon back to work cleaning out the pandas’ enclosures before
carrying 50 kg of bamboo into the adults’ enclosures.
at
in
For Mei, the pandas are like family. In fact, she spends more time with them than
with her husband, whom she met in 2014 when he was working at the centre. They
am
married two years later but now their only opportunity to meet is briefly every
Tuesday, thanks to their full schedules. At other times, they have to rely on their

Thwaites was keen to be accepted by the goats, so he had some legs especially designed

Sa
In the Swiss Alps, Thwaites spent three days mixing with goats. He had no human
company other than the goat-herder, who occasionally checked his animals, and a
photographer, who observed from a distance. Thwaites found that his false legs were
the greatest problem. Although he continued to use them, going downhill was

Read the following passage and answer all the questions. Awarded
Why do zebras have stripes? For over a hundred years, scientists have been attempting
to find the real reason. Despite the simplicity of the question and years of research,
nobody can agree on an answer. Camouflage from predators has been the most common
theory, studied in detail by Professor Anthony Sinclair from the University of British
r
Columbia. However, it remains unclear how the distinctive pattern helps zebras hide
pe
from big cats. Another theory, supported for decades by Oxford scientists Stephen and
Alison Cobb, is that stripes somehow have a cooling effect under the African sun. More
recently, however, Tim Caro from the University of California has been investigating an
Pa
alternative theory.
This latest theory is that the purpose of stripes is to protect zebras from flies. While
flies are as common in zebras’ territory as they are anywhere else, zebras have
e
especially thin skin, making it easy for flies to bite them and spread disease. Even
pl
everyday African horseflies, which do not act out of the ordinary, are a big threat. In
Africa, there is the added threat of the more dangerous tsetse fly.
m
Scientists’ explanations for how stripes protect zebras from flies vary. Again, the idea
Sa
of camouflage came up, but flies clearly have little trouble finding a zebra. Instead,
flies were shown to charge directly at a zebra from a distance. However, observations
showed that they struggled to land on a zebra when they came close. The stripes
seemed to confuse the fly’s ability to fly straight once the insect was within a metre of
ns
the zebra.
test the theory. Stripy coats were put on horses to simulate the experience of zebras.
at
Sure enough, flies began moving oddly and could not land on the coat. However, despite
overwhelming evidence, the theory hasn’t been proven conclusively. For one thing,
in
experiments like this are flawed: they were not conducted in Africa and the coats are
different to zebra skin. Nevertheless, reputable scientists supporting the theory mean
am
that farmers are already acting on the research by using zebra-patterned coats in the
hope of protecting their animals from flies.

Scientists have made a discovery that gives us an idea of what life was like in prehistoric
times. Almost 6,000 years ago, a human from the Neolithic era chewed a piece of birch
pitch. This is a similar substance to chewing gum, made by heating bark from a birch
tree. The birch pitch that this human chewed was then discarded in the mud. There, it
l
ia
was perfectly preserved until recently, when scientists found it. DNA analysis of the
‘chewing gum’ revealed, in amazing detail, what this human looked like, and an
er
accurate model recreation of the person was made.
at
The findings from the gum are remarkable because a huge amount of information about
this Neolithic human was gained by scientists without any need for bones or teeth. A
M
similar piece of 10,000-year-old birch pitch, excavated in Sweden in 1990, did not
contain enough DNA for an elaborate reconstruction. Until now, some element of
physical remains had been vital to study a person. The team found the human had been
e
female, slim and short, with dark hair, tanned skin and blue eyes. The scientists have
pl
called her Lola because the gum was discovered on the Danish island of Lolland.
However, her genes suggest she had come from a particular group elsewhere on the

suggest these people did not depend on agriculture. Although farming land and raising
animals were being practised in other parts of the world, these hunter-gatherers had

not yet started. Lola’s use of gum indicates that she belonged to this group, who would
have manufactured it as a simple glue to help make tools for hunting. Chewing would
have kept this glue soft and usable, but would also have prevented feelings of hunger.

The gum tells us some things physical remains could not. Microbes from Lola’s mouth

were preserved in it and suggest that, although she was young, she was carrying a
number of diseases. This might have meant that, when she grew older, she would have

information can be gained from something as simple as chewing gum.

Grown-up Gappers
Cia Mao is packing her bags and heading off to South Africa, where she will spend next

foreign soil since her twenties, when she flew to Japan from her native China. Never
before had she ventured further than the Chinese city of Beijing, which she visited at

South Africa and South America, with their stunning scenery, are popular destinations,

although Australia is top of the list, followed by New Zealand. A UK survey shows 35%
of fifty-year-olds are considering a gap-year. For the over sixties, this falls to 20% but

that number is increasing. Known as ‘grown-up gappers’, these people have worked
diligently for years. Many have financial security and free time in retirement to devote
Sa
to travelling abroad, although experts recommend any grown-up gapper to ensure their
insurance company will cover them, as this can be an issue.
Samantha recently returned from Peru. ‘I was a successful lawyer, well-off but bored,

and desperate to see the world,’ she recalls. One morning, she found the trip online,
paid, and resigned immediately. ‘I looked at working possibilities abroad, and opted to

the decision was right.’

The most famous diamond in the world is undoubtedly the Cullinan Diamond. It was
named after Thomas Cullinan, who established the Premier Mine in South Africa, where
it was discovered in 1905. It was Frederick Wells, a mine supervisor, who came across
the glasslike crystal in the rock face. This 3,106-carat white diamond would become
l
ia
famous worldwide. Although not as heavy as the 3,167-carat Sergio Black Diamond
found in 1893, the Cullinan became far more celebrated, as black diamonds are far less
er
in demand for jewellery.
at
The uncut Cullinan, which weighed 1.33 pounds, was sold in 1907 to the British
government. It had to be insured for $1.25 million before it was sent to the UK, despite
M
being purchased for only $1 million. This is the equivalent today of around $25.5 million.
It was then given as a birthday present to King Edward VII, who had the stone sent to
Amsterdam, where the finest diamond cutters were situated. The art of turning a rough
e
stone of this size into a polished gem was no straightforward task. It took months to
pl
consider how best to make the initial cut but when the strike came, it was the knife
which broke rather than the stone! Upon the second hit, the stone successfully split in
m
half. Cutting and polishing the diamond took eight months, with three cleavers working
14-hour days to create the nine principal gems and 96 smaller ones that were formed.
Sa
The Cullinan I was made from the largest piece, and was the shape of a pear or
‘teardrop’. This 530.2-carat blue-white jewel, known as the Star of Africa, was placed
in the sceptre, which forms part of the Crown Jewels of the United Kingdom. It is the

robes. The second-largest polished piece, Cullinan II or the Second Star of Africa, is a
317.4-carat diamond which is set in the most famous piece of the Crown Jewels, the
at
Imperial State Crown. When not in use, the Crown Jewels are on public display in the

Read the following passage and answer all the questions. Awarded
A study has looked at conversations in different countries to determine how often we say
‘thank you’. The research involved speakers of eight languages from five continents, with
around 200 volunteers in each nationality group. The results of the 1,650 participants were
published in June 2018, and showed that thanking isn’t as common as you might expect.
er
The researchers focused on casual talk between people familiar with each other socially,
rather than in business situations, and recorded it using cameras in indoor settings like
p
restaurants and homes. They measured the use of ‘thank you’ in the various languages, as
Pa
well as other phrases used to imply thanks. Researchers found that, on average, gratitude
was expressed in only 5% of possible situations. Cha’palaa, a language spoken by an
indigenous Ecuadorian tribe, never said ‘thank you’ at all. In fact, speakers of this language
e
have no such word.
pl
Other languages involved in the study included Lao in Asia and Siwu in Africa. Neither
expressed thanks frequently, with Siwu second from the bottom, slightly above Cha’palaa.
m
Polish speakers thanked each other in 2.2% of cases. At the other end of the scale, Italians
Sa
said thank you in 13.5% of possible situations, just behind the British. However, even they
only thanked others in 14.5% of cases.
While these results may suggest the world is less polite than we thought, researchers were
ns
unsurprised. Results confirmed that the closer our relationship, the less likely we are to
express thanks. Instead, we take the help of close friends and family for granted. They also
said that, ‘Second-language learners of English often fail to say ‘thank you’ at all. As
io
expressing gratitude can be considered rude in some cultures, they worry about offending
at
someone.’
Researchers do know that, regardless of nationality, people almost always do what they
in
have been asked. Just because the English and Italians thank others more, this does not
prove they are more grateful, or in fact more polite. It shows that they are taught to
am
express thanks as children growing up. However, all nationalities have a similar unspoken
understanding that they will cooperate with each other. Perhaps this makes saying ‘thank
you’ unnecessary.
