Read the following passage and answer all the questions. Awarded

Penfriends for Life

Nona Avery and Alice Powers are best friends. They rarely see one another but write
regularly, and have written over 1,000 letters over the past 70 years. This habit of
exchanging news twice a month started in 1942. Just after her 12th birthday, Nona saw

r
an advert in a magazine about making new friends across the world through writing

pe
letters.

Pa
One of the messages was written by a girl called Alice, from Ohio, USA. Nona had never
even left her home town of Sheffield, England. She thought this would be a great way

e
to learn about a different life. She sat down immediately and wrote a letter, which she

pl
sent with a photograph of herself. Two weeks later, Alice’s letter arrived, also with a
picture of her and her family. The girls were the same age and realised they were

m
similar in many ways, sharing a love of books, films and fashion. They even both had a
pet dog. Sa
Throughout their lives, they celebrated major events like weddings and births. They
ns
had families and jobs, Nona as a secretary and Alice in a hospital office but, as neither
of them earned much, they had to wait 45 years to meet. In 1987, Alice saved enough
io

to visit England and she travelled there later that year. They were nervous and excited
at

to finally meet. In 1991, Nona visited Alice in Ohio. They still write, of course, but
haven’t visited each other since. Nona’s daughter recently bought her a computer so
in

the friends could communicate more quickly, but Nona says they prefer to write by
am

hand and that ‘email is not for us’.
