A Lost Bear
Police officers in the city of Yonkers, New York State, have caught a massive black
bear. The three-year-old male is the latest of many bears seen in Westchester County
over the past five years, but the first in Yonkers since the 1990s. County Conservation
Officer Tom Kott said, ‘It’s unusual to see bears in Yonkers. There’s not much for
r
them here. They’re more common in rural areas.’ The bear probably ended up in
pe
Yonkers after following the Bronx River from farther north near Vermont, and then
got lost in town, looking for food.
Pa
Residents of Yonkers first spotted the animal in the Bronx River Park on Monday and
the police had calls from slightly different locations. They told residents to keep
rubbish bins shut to avoid attracting the bear. On Tuesday, however, a concerned
e
housewife reported the bear eating food from the rubbish bin in her back garden.
pl
Police came to the house but the bear escaped into the woods and climbed a tree.
The police had to wait until the sun rose on Wednesday morning. They captured the
m
90 kg animal as it sat in a tree, where it had been for four hours. The police vet shot
the bear with a tranquilizer gun to make it sleep and it fell eight metres from the
Sa
tree onto a safety net below. It had taken them 36 hours to find and safely capture
the animal, without harming it.
The bear was taken to a conservation centre in New Paltz for observation and medical
ns
checks. On Friday, it will be released into the Eastern State Forest, which is on the
opposite side of the Hudson River to Bear Mountain. These bears are not much of a
danger to humans, Kott said. ‘But bears are always hungry. They spend a great deal
io
of time exploring for food, and this can bring them close to humans’ rubbish bins.’

Parts of Traditional Highland Dress
ia
gl
An
Highland dress describes the traditional dress of Scotland. The most well-known part
of highland dress for a man is the kilt. Although a kilt looks rather like a skirt, it is
worn by men and boys. It is made of checked or tartan woollen fabric and comes
down to the knees.
r
pe
The Scottish kilt is typically worn with kilt hose. These are long woollen stockings or
socks. The hose are turned down at the top, just below the knee, and are often white
or cream in colour.
Pa
A ghillie or ghillie brogue is usually made of black hide or leather. It typically has
e
holes around the top and sides. These holes are to let the water out and to help keep
the feet dry. Long laces which tie around the ankles help stop the ghillies from
pl
coming off in the mud.
m
At the front of the kilt, a sporran is traditionally worn. This is a kind of pouch which
Sa
is used for keeping things such as money in. It serves as a kind of wallet or purse as a
kilt has no pockets. The sporran hangs down below the belt and it can be made of
leather or fur.
ns
A Balmoral is a round, brimless cap. This traditional headgear became popular in the
io
late 19th century. It is made of black or blue wool. It is flat on top and has ribbons
that come down behind the head.
at
in
On top of the Balmoral is a round ball, made of wool, which is called a toorie. This is
in the centre of the cap and is traditionally red in colour.
am
A sgian-dubh is a small single-edged knife which is worn with highland dress. The
Ex
sgian-dubh is usually kept tucked into the top of the hose. Therefore only the handle
of the knife is usually visible. It was generally used for preparing food and eating, but
could also be used for protection.
ia
gl
A garter is a strap which is worn around the hose to keep them in place and to stop
them falling down round the ankles. A flash is a small piece of fabric which is part of
An
the garter and hangs down from the top of the hose. You may be able to see two or
three flashes at the side of each leg.
