TOUR START – By flag at the south end of History walk

Call your group by Tour number and start time. For example: “All those in tour group 1 with a
scheduled start of 6 pm, gather round, we will be starting shortly”

Talking points:
I’ll be telling you a little about what you will encounter at each location. We ask that you stay
socially distanced and wear your mask to help protect each other from the spread of COVID.
I want to point out our outdoor piano mural by local artist Shaunte Lewis. You will also encounter
Shaunte farther at the Visual Arts Center.
We are going to walk to the main entrance of the theater. Along the way, we will pass the Donor
Patio. If you purchased a brick prior to April 1, 2021, it’s there for you to stop and find. If you’d like
to purchase a brick, you can find out how at the AFL tent.
Follow me (walk slowly give people the freedom to explore their bricks)

Time: 3 min
STOP OUTSIDE THEATER ENTRANCE

The theater has been renovated with lots of updates. If you’ve visited before renovations, I’m sure
you will be pleasantly surprised by the transition.
Inside the lobby on your right, you’ll find the fused glass American flag titled "Freedom" created
by our Latino community and art therapist and glass artist Joani Rothenberg and Yael Buxbaum.
To your left is our new bar, crafted by local woodworker Phill Bly. We also have a sneak peek of
the Augmented Reality app being created by Paul Mealy on display along with some fresh-
popped popcorn.
When we move to the inner lobby you might want to peek inside one of the public restrooms to
see the wallpaper of a photo of the 1929 Academy Awards banquet. 1929 is the year this theater
was built for Fort Harrison.
Then we will move into the theater house where we have AFL videos playing on our new movie
screen. You can expect our Films at the Fort free movies to start this August with Grease.
I will then gather you all by the right exit doors to move to our next stop. Let's check it out.

Allow people to explore and self-guide through the space but after about 8 min lead people into the
theater house to watch the video.

Time: 8 min
STOP AT EAST SIDE ENTRANCE OF THEATER HOUSE

Gather folks and lead them to stop 4. ”Updates in here include new paint, flooring, and tech booth
upgrades such as our new movie screen. As you may have noticed we also have an adopt a seat
program if you're interested talk to an AFL staff member.

Now please follow me as we move on and let the next tour come in. The facility will be open all
night, and you are welcome to come back in on your own later. But please wait until after the
tours finish tp help prevent congestion in the hallways."

Time: 5 min
STOP AT THEATER ADDITION ENTRANCE

The theater addition offers public restrooms for the community while here enjoying the
outdoor spaces.
Inside the lobby, we have an interactive sculpture by BREAKFAST from Brooklyn, NY. The flip
disc sculpture shows data visualization in waves representing the amount of green energy
being produced in Central Indiana. It’s also interactive and reflects your movement.
Then we are going to take the stairs to the second floor. If you cannot take the stairs, we have
an ADA lift you are welcome to use and meet us upstairs.
Once upstairs, you will see two activity rooms – our new board room where Poets Laureate is
reading original poetry and are two banners created by black artists Jamahl Crouch and
Mathew Cooper, reflecting their thoughts and emotions following the death of George Floyd.
The other room is not new, but now has public access thanks to the addition. This room has a
convertible puppet stage created by Phill Bly. It will be used for rehearsals, classes, and small
audience performances. Today we have the artwork of Lawrence students on display. Once
you are finished perusing, we will all meet in the puppet stage room to continue the tour.

Move into the theater lobby and assist with anyone who needs the lift before heading
upstairs.

Time: 12 min
STOP AT BACK STAIR OF PUPPET STAGE

This is the old staircase that leads downstairs to backstage. Again, if you need to use the lift,
you are welcome to do so now and we will meet you downstairs.
Backstage now offers two dressing rooms each equipped with a bathroom.
We will then go through the extended loading dock and through our kitchenette that services
both AFL staff and our performance partners.
Through the kitchen is access to the public space that has all-gender ADA-compliant restrooms
for visitors. We will head out the backdoor so as not to congest the other tour coming through,
but before you head outside, take a look at the mural on the wall by local artist Shamira
Wilson. Shamira is here tonight and signing prints of the mural.

Time: 5 min
STOP AT HISTORY ARTIST WALK CROSSING

These two walkways are referred to as the History Walk (the red pavers and lampposts) and the
Artists’ Walk, the walk with integrated niches for artists to set up their wares.
The limestone benches along the History Walk are being hand-carved by local artist, Cheryl
Lorance. The benches will depict all the feet that have walked this land before us, from
indigenous people, prairie farmers, military, and modern-day today.
The Musical Swings an internationally awarded traveling art installation by Daily Tous Les Jours,
out of Montreal Canada and were here for our kick off two years ago. This is the very first set of
permanent musical swings in the world. This summer, we will be hosting a concert with Music
in Bloom that includes live music in unison with the swings played by the community.
We will move along the artist’s walk to the Visual Arts Center. Please move along and you can
come back to spend more time with the artists after the tour.

Time: 5 min
STOP AT EAST ENTRANCE TO VAC

The Visual Art Center will open later this year. The building was delayed due to the installation
of new windows. The Visual Arts Center is of, by, and for the community and is run by a
committee of volunteers who will determine classes and exhibitions. If you are an artist or art
enthusiast that would like to be a part of the committee, you can speak to the Committee
chair, Vicky White who is inside.
The first floor offers a small gallery that will have an exhibition that changes monthly.
There are two teaching spaces, a ceramics studio in the basement and an all-purpose
classroom upstairs along with the resident artist’s studio.
Lawrence residents and ISO musicians Lisa and Perry Scott are performing in the Gallery
And Shaunt’e Lewis will help you leave your mark and give your thumbs up to the Arts in a
community project.
I’ll leave you here to self-guide. If you can handle the steps, please exit through the east door
and turn left to experience the marching sidewalk by Brian Norris of Bowen Technovation.
There is a docent inside to give you direction.

Thank you for allowing me to guide you through this tour. The facilities will remain open this
evening. We do ask that you let all the tours go through before you reenter to explore further so
that we don’t have any congested places. And don't forget that at 8:15 pm we will have some
entertainment starting at the amphitheater. Enjoy!
