ELECTRICAL TUTORIAL #2

1. The charge on the electron and the electron mass are correctly stated respectively as:
(a) 9.11 x 10—31 C and 1.60 x 10—19 kg
(b) 1.60 x 10—19 C and 9.11 x 10—31 kg
(c) 1.60 x 10—31 C and 9.11 x 10—19 kg
(d) 9.11 x 10—19 C and 1.60 x 10—31 kg

2. A small charged sphere is suspended in a uniform electric field. The electric force is sufficient to balance the weight of the sphere.
The charge on the sphere is 4.8 x 10—19 C and the weight of the sphere is 1.5 x 10—14 N.
What is the magnitude of the electric field strength?
(a) 3.1 x 104 NC—1
(b) 3.2 x 10—5 NC—1
(c) 7.2 x 10—33 NC—1
(d) 3.1 x 105 NC—1

3. If the electric field strength a distance d from a point charge is 84.0 NC—1 what would be the electric field strength at a distance of
2d from the same point charge?
(a) 84 NC—1
(b) 42 NC—1
(c) 21 NC—1
(d) 168 NC—1

4. Two identical point charges of equal magnitude a distance of 3.0 m apart, experience a force of repulsion of 0.0075 N. The magnitude
of the charge on each object is:
(a) 2.74 x 10—6 coulombs
(b) 7.50 x 10—12 coulombs
(c) 1.58 x 10—6 coulombs
(d) 581 coulombs

5. Consider this arrangement of two charged spheres A and B. The charge on sphere B is
known to be +3.00pC. The charge on sphere A is –1.00pC. They are separated by 1.50m.

Determine the exact position of a point D, along the line on which the spheres A and
B sit, at which the electric field strength would be zero.

6. Two small charged spheres, A and B, are placed a distance of 1.20m apart. Sphere A is
positively charged and has a charge magnitude of +3.60pC. Point P is two-thirds of the
distance along the line AB. The electric field strength at point P is found to be zero.

(a) Determine the charge on Sphere B.

(b) A third charged sphere, C, identical to sphere A, is then placed 0.900m from sphere A as shown in the diagram below.
Determine the resultant electrical force on sphere A.
7. An electric field is created between two large parallel plates separated by a distance of 2.50 cm
as shown at the right. When a small sphere of mass 5.00g is suspended in the field on a light
string, the sphere moves out until the string makes an angle of 30o with the vertical.

If the magnitude of the charge on the sphere is known to be 1.25 μC, determine the voltage
between the plates.

8. Two parallel plates have an electric field of 600 NC-1 between them, with the left-hand plate being
positive. An electron is released from rest at a point midway between the plates. The plates are separated
by 2.50cm.

(a) How long does it take to strike the left-hand plate?

(b) With what speed does it strike the left-hand plate?

(c) What is the impulse on the left-hand plate if the electron, on colliding, adheres to the plate?

9.* An electron travelling horizontally at 2.96×107 m.s-1 passes between two horizontal plates 5.00cm long and 20.0mm apart which have
a voltage applied across them of 235V as shown.

At what angle (θ) to the horizontal will the electron beam be travelling after it passes between the horizontal plates? (You may ignore
gravitational effects.)

10.* A beam of electrons travelling horizontally with a speed of 7.50×106 m.s-1, enters a set of deflection plates of length 10.0cm and
separation 1.00cm, with a voltage of 25.0V between them. Determine the angle to the horizontal of the beam of electrons emerging
from the other end of the plates.
