1. An electric dipole is held in uniform electric field.


(i) Using suitable diagram, show that it does not undergo any translatory
motion.
(ii) Define torque, giving its SI unit; derive an expression for the torque
acting on this dipole.
2. An electric dipole consists of two charges of magnitude 1  c. They are
placed 3 cm apart in a uniform electric field of 100 N C-1 acting at right
angles to the axis of dipole. Calculate i) dipole moment of electric dipole
ii) electric force acting on either charge iii) torque acting on dipole.
3. A point charge causes an electric flux of -1.0 X 103 Nm2/C to pass through
a spherical Gaussian surface of 10cm radius centered on the charge.
a.) If the radius of the Gaussian surface were doubled, how much flux
would pass through the surface?
b.) What is the value of the point charge?
4. Define electric field intensity. Write its S I unit. Write the magnitude and
direction of electric field intensity due to an electric dipole of length 2a at
the midpoint of the line joining the two charges.
5. Calculate the electric flux through a spherical surface of radius 10 cm
enclosing a negative charge of 8.854 μC. What happens to the flux when
the radius of the surface is doubled?
6. Two point charges qA= 3C and qB= -3C are located at 20cm apart in
vacuum
(a) What is the electric field at the midpoint o of the line AB joining
the two charges?
(b) If a negative test charge of magnitude 1.5nc is placed at the
point, what is the force experienced, by the test change?
7. The sum of two point charges is 6c. They attract each other with a force
of 0.9 N. When kept 40 cm apart in vacuum. Find their charges.
8. Four point charges are placed at the four corners of a square in the two
ways (i) and (ii) as shown below. Will the electric field at the center of
the square, be the same or different in the two configurations and why?

9. Two fixed point charges +4e and +e units are separated by a distance `a’.
Where should a third positive point charge be placed for it to be in
equilibrium?
10.A uniformly charged conducting sphere of 2.4 m diameter has a surface
charge density of 80.0  C. m-2. Find (a) The charge on the sphere and (b)
total electric flux leaving the surface of sphere.
11.Two equal charges of 10 -16 C each are kept 20 cm apart in air. Calculate
a) electric field at a point midway - between them
b) Force acting on charge of - 10 -16 C kept mid-way between them.
12.An electron falls through a distance of 1.5 cm in a uniform electric field
of magnitude2.0 × 104 N/C (Fig. a)

Calculate the time it takes to fall through this distance starting from rest.

If the direction of the field is reversed (fig. b) keeping its magnitude


`unchanged, Calculate the time taken by a proton to fall through this
distance starting from rest.

13.(a)An electric dipole of dipole moment p consists of point charges +q and


–q separated by a distance 2a apart. Deduce the expression for the electric
field E due to the dipole at a distance x from the centre of the dipole on its
axial line in terms of the dipole moment p.
(b) Given the electric field in the region E= 2xi, find the net electric flux
through the cube and the charge enclosed by it.
14.An electric dipole is held at an angle θ with a uniform electric field. What
is the torque acting on it? Explain what happens to the dipole on being
released.
15.Charges of magnitudes 2Q and –Q are located at points (a,0,0) and
(4a,0,0). Find the ratio of flux of electric field due to these charges through
concentric spheres of radii 2a and 8a centred at the origin.
16.Two identical plane metallic surfaces A and B are kept parallel to each
other in air separated by a distance of 1.0 cm as shown in the figure 2.
Surface A is given a positive potential of 10V and the outer surface of B
is earthed. (i) What is the magnitude and direction of the uniform electric
field between points Y and Z? (ii) What is the work done in moving a
charge of 20 C from point X and point Y?

17.Two point charges `q’ and `2q’ are kept at a distance `r’ from each other
in air. A third point charge Q is to be placed on the line joining the two
charges such that the net force acting on q and 2q is zero. What is the
magnitude, sign and position of the third charge in terms of q and r?
