What is pressing?
Pressing or ironing is the most important finishing process in readymade
garments sector which is done by subjecting a cloth to heat and pressure
with or without steam to remove unwanted creases and to impart a flat
appearance to the garments. Pressing or ironing also done to introduce
creases in the apparel. Pressing is also termed as ironing.
Objectives:
• To flatten out the undesirable wrinkles, creases and crush marks.
• To hide many imperfections.
• To make creases where the garment design needs it.
• To mould the garment to the silhouette of the body.
• To prepare garments for further sewing.
• To refinish the garment after completion of the production process.
Types:
• Under pressing – It is the pressing operation performed on garment
components as they are being made up.
• Top pressing/Final pressing – This refers to the finishing operation,
where a garment undergoes after being completely assembled.
Basic components of pressing:

Pressing methods and equipment
1. Hand irons:
• It exists for a long time.
• This is triangular in shape and weighted from 1 to 15 kgs.
• Traditional one was a small case, made by iron which was heated by
burning heated coal and wood and the garments are pressed by the lower
smooth surfaces of case.
• There were also irons which were heated by gas flame inside the metal
casting and it was mainly used in touching up of men’s jackets.
• However in recent times, steam and electric irons are used commonly.
The two basic irons are:
▪ Dry iron
▪ Electric steam iron

Steam press
•This contains a static buck and a head which closes onto it.
•The fabric is placed on the buck and the head is pressed on it
and pressing is done by applying heat and pressure.
•It has a frame carrying the buck which is generally round in
shape. Besides this, it has linkages to close the head (head is
placed down on the buck by scissor action) , pipe system to
supply steam to head and buck, a vacuum system to provide
suction through the buck, a table around the buck to aid the
handling of the garments and foot control for head closure
and vacuum. Used to press skirt, shirt, trouser, etc.
