TUTOR MARKED ASSIGNMENT TWO

Diploma in Small Craft Surveying TMA 02

Modules 4 & 5

Part 1
Provide an introduction to your TMA submission, relevant to the content of the paper, which establishes the
background, aims and objectives of your work.

Part 2
A steel monohull survey vessel of 23.5m LOA has suffered a contact damage at the waterline in the area of the
starboard forward hull and is holed. The hole in the structure is in way of a diesel oil tank which is now partially
flooded with sea water. The owner wishes to move the vessel to a place of repair under her own power, but the
Flag State Administration have stated that temporary repairs must be performed in the first instance or, the
vessel must be towed unmanned, to a place of repair. There are no means to slip the vessel at her present
location.

Discuss the advice and recommendations which you would give to the ship owner concerning the dangers
involved with a towed voyage and, how the stability and survivability of the vessel are affected by such a
damage.

Explain how the owner should prepare the vessel for the towed voyage.

Part 3
The owner of the damaged vessel has instructed you to attend the vessel at her present location and at the
subsequent place of repair which is 160 nautical miles from the present location, located across an open sea.
Your instructions are to ensure that both the ‘towed’ and the ‘towing’ vessels are safe and correctly certified for
the towed voyage.

At the place of repair, you are instructed to advise on repairs required and to oversee these on behalf of the
owner.

Discuss how you would prepare for the towing survey and for the survey at the place of repair.

Explain what advice you would provide to your principal (client) at each stage of your involvement.

Detail what tests you would call for at the place of repair and explain why.

Part 4
During your visit to the vessel at the place of repair you are approached by an individual who, without
introduction, asks questions as to the works being performed, the cost involved with this and, the cause of the
incident.

Explain how you would handle this situation.
