in diameter is drawn in the centre of an outer circle
having a diameter 9.5”& divide into three part. The
outer circle is divided into three equal zones by drawing
angles of 120 degree on the on either side of a vertical
line drawn by drawing a perpendicular line on the
horizontal diameter.

The scheme of legal hits is illustrated. Ten to
fifteen subjects are given a demonstration by a
tester & allowed to practice as per the
demonstration before taking the test . The ball
is placed just beyond the outer circle of the
target . on the signal ready , go . The examinee
has to tap the ball in & out of the smaller inner
circle with the stick . Three 15 sec trials are
administered .
Score : one point is given every
time when the ball is tapped (do
not pushed) either into the inner
circle or out of the inner circle . no
points are given when the ball is
tapped in any outer circle area
zones. The cumulative count of

yards centre of the goal post.
One of the of 45degree to left side and on the right side same
as the left side and another is 90degree angle middle of the
circle. The dimension of the hitting area are 2meter long
and 1meter depth in side of the circle. The target board will
be 9 inches wide and 12 feet long and at least 1/2inches
thicks. It is made by hard board.

* THE SCHMITHALS
FIELD HOCKEY SKILL
TEST
INTRODUCTION -: This test was constructed by
Schmithals in 1940.
MENT FOR-: Collegiate girls and boys.
PURPOSE -: To measure the ball control ability of the
hockey players.
TEST ITEMS –: 1
EQUIPMENT-: Hockey sticks, stopwatch, hockey balls,
high jump standards, marking materials tape or chalk.
FIELD MARKINGS-: All markings are made as 2”wide
lines. This test needs an open area of 50’long and
20’wide. A 20’long (6.1 m) line in marked for a starting
line .A foul line 35’ long (10.6 m) perpendicular to the
starting line is marked at the mid-point of the SL.A
restraining line 10’ long crossed and perpendicular to the
foul line is drawn at a distance of 30’ from the starting
line. Another line (one foot long) perpendicular and
bisected by the foul line is drawn at a distance of 35’
from the starting line .A cross consisting of two bisecting
lines of one foot each, is drawn at a distance of 45’ in a
straight line with the foul line .One high jump standard
is placed on each one foot bisecting line as shown in
points A or B.
TEST ADMINISTRATION-: After giving a practical
demonstration to a group of 10 to 15 examinees, one
examinee is asked to stand behind the starting line with a
hockey ball to the left of the foul line. At the signal
“READY? GO!’’, the examinee dribbles the ball forwards
parallel to the foul line and the tester starts the stop
watch. As soon as the ball reaches the restraining line, it is
hit from the left side of the foul line to the right side of the
first obstacle (A).And the examinee runs around the left
side of the obstacle (A) and recovers the ball. This action
of the examinee is considered analogous to a dodge. Now,
the examinee takes a turn from left to right while taking
the ball around the obstacle (B).This control of the ball is
analogous to a circular tackle.
*Just after turning back, the subject drives the ball
towards the starting line .If the drive is not hard
enough to take ball up to the starting line, the
examinee has to follow the ball to hit it again so that
the ball crosses the starting line. The player has to
repeat the above procedure six times with a proper
care to ensure that s /he is not fatigued while repeating
the trials. As soon as the ball crosses the starting line
on sixth time drive of the ball, the tester stops the stop
watch.
*FOULS -: Each of the following action constitutes a
foul-:
*The ball or the examinee crosses the foul line before
reaching the restraining line.
*While performing dodge, the examinee fails to hit
from the left side of the foul line.
*The examinee makes “Sticks”.
*The trials executed with any foul are not considered
or counted for the score.
*SCORING -: The time of each trial is taken from the
signal ‘GO’ until the ball crosses the starting line
after the drive hit. Each subject is allowed one
practice trial before recording the time of six test
trials.
