SECTION 1 A724-A728 PROGRAM UPGRADE

1.1. UPGRADE PACKAGE

The upgrade package comprises:
1) Mechanical parts:
– Complete metallic headband for both A724 and A728 (code s5902515)
– New slimmer gray plastic tip for the probe assembly.
2) Software 01.03 consisting of:
– # 1 diskette with said software (code S5300040)
– # 1 Addendum to Instruction Manual for Operator (Version B/B June 1999)

NOTE: The new software provides several advantages such as: AUTORUN and
amplified SCALE especially useful for detecting acoustic reflex threshold. These
modifications apply to both A724 and A728.

3) PROGRAM UPGRADE INSTRUCTIONS as per 1.2 of this document, comprising:

– # 1 Amplaid Adapter for 2-cc coupler for calibration of ipsilateral reflex stimuli.
– Equipment needed to calibrate A724 and A728 is listed in Section 1.2 of the A724-A728
Technical Manual.

NOTE: The new software provides several advantages such as: AUTORUN and
amplified SCALE especially useful for detecting acoustic reflex threshold. These
modifications apply to both A724 and A728.

1.1.1. ADVANTAGES PROVIDED BY THE PACKAGE

The new outstanding advantages are:
1) New 01.03 Software
– FASTER RECORDING: the new SW provides AUTORUN - i.e. the initial "pressuring
system" etc is over-ridden and the instrument starts immediately in AUTORUN - this makes
recording TYMP faster.
– Besides the default parameters, the audiologist can modify parameters by means of the
PARAMETERS softkey and not only establish a smaller pressure range (as he mentions) but
also change preset RATE of pressure changes and go as fast as 300 daPa/s. 200 daPa/s
would be advisable. [This is available on SW of unit in your hands].
– REFLEX: the windows (which we call "boxes") have been maintained of the same size. This
greatly improves the resolution of the recorded reflex and its display.
– The new SW provides the new softkey SCALE that expands the scale and amplifies the
recorded reflex.
– Instead of the default scale (from +0.1 cc to -0.4 cc only), the SCALE softkey is available.

Section 1 A724-A728 PROGRAM UPGRADE

New scales can be selected also during reflex acquisition so that the expanded reflex
amplitude is displayed during recording. The new scales available are from +0.075 cc to -0.3
cc and from +0.05 cc to -0.2 cc. This makes an incredible difference in viewing the AR and
fully appreciating its amplitude.
2) New headband and probe tip
– NEW HEADBAND: this is the standard Telephonic headband, with a special holder to hold
the probe cable.

NOTE: Easily fitted to most head sizes, it is extremely robust.

– NEW PROBE TIP: much slimmer it ensures better fitting and sealing in the greatest majority
of ear canals.

1.2. PROGRAM UPGRADE INSTRUCTIONS

1.2.1. EQUIPMENT NEEDED

1) 1 PC
2) The upgrade package as listed in 1.1 Upgrade Package.

1.2.2. BEFORE INSTALLING THE NEW SOFTWARE

ATTENTION: Before installing the new software, SAVE acoustic stimuli calibration.

This applies to acoustic reflex stimuli as well as to audiometry stimuli for the A728.

To save these data, switch the A724-A728 ON, depress MENU and the CAL REFLEX and, if this
is the case, the CAL AUDIOM softkeys. For reference to calibration pages, see TECHNICAL
MANUAL sections 2.7.2 and 2.7.3.

Depress PRINT and print each page. The printout of the values for both ipsi and contralateral
reflex calibration and, if the case, for audiometry must be kept to recalibrate the unit after software
has been upgrade.

1.2.3. UPGRADING WITH THE NEW SOFTWARE

To perform the software upgrade of the A724 and A728, follow carefully these instructions:
1) Switch off the A728/A724 if it's on.
2) Connect the RS232 output of the equipment, to the serial port Com1 of a PC with a 9 pin
serial cable.
3) Open MS-DOS prompt.
4) Check that the directory C:\> is displayed. If not, type it in.
5) Insert the disk "A728-A724 Program Release 01.03" in the PC.
6) Type: a:finstall
7) Press ENTER.
8) Check that the PC displays "INSTALLATION PROCEDURE" and the message “Press
<RETURN> key to start".
9) Press ENTER again.
10) Check that the message "Waiting for PC_CPU connection" is displayed.
11) Switch the A728/A724 ON.
12) The PC will display: "SENDING NEW DATA BLOCK".

amplaid A724-A728

13) The A728/A724 LCD will display "ERASING SECTOR NUMBER n…OK" followed by
"PROGRAMMING MEMORY FROM 0 TO 896 kb …kb". These messages monitor, in real
time, the upgrading in progress.
14) As soon as the loading has terminated, the PC will display the message "RESTART
A724/A728".

ATTENTION: ATTENTION: ensure that the numbers under READ match the ones
under LENGTH and that LOADED is show under RESULT.

15) The A728/A724 must display "RESTART A724/A728" and the size 704 kb of the loaded
program.

ATTENTION: should there be any problems blocking the PC, restart it and repeat
the entire procedure WITHOUT SWITCHING THE A728/A724 OFF; in case the
A728/A724 has been switched off, STOP the entire operation and contact the
authorized Service Center.

16) Proceed in the same manner should the problem be engendered by power failure.
17) Switch the A728/A724 off and to disconnect the serial cable.
18) On the PC press ESC to quit the installation procedure.
19) The PC will display the following:
C:\a724_8de>del romdisk.bin
C:\a724_8de>del fsetup.exe
C:\a724_8de>cd..
C:\>rd a724_8de
C:\>
20) Remove the upgrading disk from the PC.

1.2.4. SUBSTITUTING THE MECHANICAL PARTS

All mechanical parts must be substituted before performing calibration.
1) HEADBAND: change the hand band with the new metallic headband for both A724 and
A728 (code s5902515).
2) Gray tip of probe preamplifier

NOTE: The gray tip is provided WITHOUT the 3 tubes.

– Remove the 3 plastic tubes from the old tip. Refer to Service Manual 2.4. Probe Assembly
as well as to figure below.
– Replace the 3 tubes as per figure, ensuring correct connections as shown in Figure 1.1.

1.2.5. CALIBRATING THE A724-A728

NOTE: The calibration can be pe2-ccrformed only after the probe tip has been
substituted.

To calibrate the A724-a728 proceed as follows:

1) IMPEDANCE MEASURING SYSTEM
– Calibrate 226 Hz TYMP - refer to INSTRUCTION MANUAL Part 2, 2.2.5.1
– If calibration is OK, i.e. the value of the cavity is actually within tolerances, the impedance
measuring system is correct.
– Should the values not be OK, proceed and calibrate LOOP CALIBRATION as per 3.3.1 and

Section 1 A724-A728 PROGRAM UPGRADE

226 Hz TYMP CALIBRATION as per 3.3.2 of Technical Manual.

– Calibrate high frequency probe tones for A728 only.
2) ACOUSTIC STIMULI
– Proceed and calibrate IPSI and CONTRA reflex stimuli as per 2.7.2 of Technical Manual.

NOTE: Use Amplaid adapter on 2-cc coupler.

– Calibrate Audiometry stimuli in case of A728 as per 2.7.3 of Technical Manual.
