MAT5010 – Foundations of Data Science

Assignment
Submission Deadline - 21 October 2020

1. For each of the following statements pertaining to hypothesis testing, state True or False.
Also, justify your claim.
a. For a two-tailed test, if we reject a null hypothesis at 5% level of significance, we
would also reject it 1% level.
b. For a two-tailed test, if we fail to reject a null hypothesis at 1% level of significance,
we would also fail to reject it at 5% level.
c. For a two-tailed test the alternate hypothesis can be .
d. The area of rejection region for a two-tailed test will be the same as the area of the
rejection region of the corresponding one-tailed with the same significance level.
e. The magnitude of the critical value for a two-tailed test will be smaller than the
critical value of the corresponding one-tailed test with the same significance level.

2. Twenty five pairs of values of variables and led to the following results:

∑ ∑ ∑ ∑ ∑

A subsequent scrutiny showed that two pairs of values (8, 14) [here, first value corresponds
to and the second value corresponds to ] and (8, 6) were noted down as (8, 12) and (6,
8). Obtain the correct value of the correlation coefficient. Find the correct regression
equation of .

3. The table below gives the price in thousands (X1), the number of bedrooms (X2) and the
number of baths (X3) for 10 houses.

Price Bedrooms Baths

165 3 2
200 3 3
225 4 3
180 2 3
202 4 2
250 4 4
275 3 4
300 5 3
155 2 2

Use normal equations to find the regression equation of X1 on X2 and X3. Use the regression
equation to estimate the price of a house having 5 bedrooms and 4 baths. Also, find the
simple and partial correlation coefficients between X1 and X3.

4. The simple correlation coefficients between temperature (X1), corn yield (X2) and rainfall
(X3) are , and . Calculate the partial correlation coefficients
, and . Also, calculate .
