I. INTRODUCTION
During this generation, social media has grown into a large factor in life, it has been used by
both young and old, it’s a way to connect people who we don’t talk to often and update them in
what’s happening in our daily lives. But lately, Filipinos have a large impact in most social
medias, people categorize us as “most active in social medias”. Examples are stans within the
Kpop community, the most known group that has the most active stan community is BTS’s
Army which are commonly to be seen within the Twitter platform, where they share their
interests and support for the boy group.
Because of this, companies and creators use our culture to gain support from Filipino. Using
references to promote themselves and gain attraction, where we as Filipino take pride in our
country and advocate these ideas in the internet and we, the Filipinos, become “free advertisers”
for these kinds of promotion.
In this research we see how much Filipinos involve themselves in social media and how it
affects the platform itself, how large the effect would be, and evidences on our influence in
social media.
II. BODY
And on the other hand, we have 18,442,000 Instagram Filipino users which is over 16%
of the population currently.
And lastly, with Twitter, we have over 10,200,000 users which was recorded during
October 2021 leading us to the 12th country which has the most users.
We Filipinos often post in social medias anything related to our country. We take pride when
there is representation happening to any form of media. From videogames, sports, movies,
shows, or anything else, we use social media to express our thoughts on popular media
representing our culture.
An example of this is when a Pinay Weightlifter named Hidilyn Diaz won a gold medal on the
Olympics 2020 that happened on Tokyo Japan. This official news account that posted her
achievement attracted a lot of attention and with a total of 23.4k likes, 8.2k retweets, and 167
comments.
Filipinos tend to use social platforms to show their pride and support for their country.
Which is why there are corporates, influencers, companies, industries, and many more use what
we call “Pinoy Baiting” where they use Filipino culture as a way to get attention of Filipinos so
they can get more views and interactions using us. Whereas some are unintentional, there are a
few individuals that use Filipino culture to bait in Pinoys for clicks, views, and/or money.
The study shows how social medias has influenced Filipinos and how Filipinos influenced
social medias.
Study shows Filipinos uses social media averagely four hours a day. Meaning social media
has become a daily part of life of a Filipino. Social media has largely grown into our country that
almost everyone is using it. Almost all of the population are using Facebook, which is the most
mainstream social media that we Filipino currently use, from young to old.
The large user amount on Filipino social media have influenced others on how they run their
account. The usage of our cultures for clout and attention instead of appreciation have now
become common for foreigners. The amount of support we give to these kinds of medias have
been to exaggerated and over-the-top. Knowing this, they take advantage to Filipino social media
users to gain attraction.
IV. RECOMMENDATION
A recommendation for the excessive amount we spend on social media is we control how
much we use social platforms on our daily lives. Knowing this we should have better
monitoring on what people posts and do in these platforms, since there are people who sends
hate and insensitive thoughts to other people that may hurt them. Due to the animosity of
social media accounts, people tend to be braver on sending consequential ideas because they
can stay hidden and be safe from trouble. We should also have an age minimum and limit for
social medias due to the fact that it is not healthy for children and elderly to use these kinds
of platform since it is both misleading and can be toxic in certain areas.
Social media has affected our culture itself. It has grown into a large part of our daily lives,
from trends to news, we use social media as a form to share our ideas and express ourselves.
Filipinos use social media excessively compared to other countries, we also are one of the
countries who are participative on support our culture when it comes to medias, to the point
where sometimes it gets invasive. This study shows on how much Filipinos are present on the
internet, and how it impacts the social platforms itself, where other countries are aware on
how much presence we have on social medias.
