Unit 1: Linear Systems MPM2D

Overall Expectations

By the end of this course students will be able to:

• model and solve problems involving the intersection of two straight lines

Specific Expectations

By the end of this course students will be able to:

• solve linear systems with two linear equations in two variables using the algebraic method
of substitution and elimination
• solve problems that arise from realistic situations described in words or represented by linear
systems of two equations in two variables by choosing an appropriate algebraic or graphical
method

Overview

As a student you should…

• understand what a linear system is

• be able to determine the solution of a linear system, interpret the meaning of the solution and
draw conclusions or make recommendations based on the solution
• be able to employ a variety of solution methods that we have examined:
o guess-and-check
o graphing, by hand
o graphing, w/ technology
o algebraic, via elimination
o algebraic, via substitution
• be able to model a problem arising from a realistic situation as a linear system
• be able to use technology to perform a linear regression on a set of points to determine the
equation of a line of best fit
• be able to judge the suitability of a line of best fit based on the R2 associated with the line of
best fit
